Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Configuring the Ribble R872

So I was previously looking at the specialized allez sport compact 2014. I may very well still go for that bike but in the mean time (Saving the money as opposed to finance) I've been looking at the carbon offerings.

Ribble offer the bike builder option and I'm just curious as to how much more experienced riders would configure a bike like this.

https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/bbd/ro...nf_BBRC&bike=1

The idea is that I want some thing more sporty and some thing I can put much more power into then my existing 2012 giant roam (3).

I'm 6" and roughly 195 lbs, I also live in Swansea so I'm afforded a really nice long stretch of cycle path along the sea but also some quite steep/long hills.

If I can add any thing from my Strava profile to help in any way I will do.

I really do throw myself on the mercy of more experienced individuals as I just don't understand any more then the very basics about the mechanics behind road bikes.

My budget is adaptable, if 1k is going to get me a suitable and happy bike then fine but if 1.5k is where I should be looking then I understand.

Genuinely and seriously thank you to any one that can help me.

That's a sweet bike. I'd go with 105 and RS80 C24 wheels and upgrade the saddle and tires elsewhere.

For £1435, you can get Centaur and Zondas, which I would choose.

I don't understand the differences in Cassette and chainsets.

As an ex smoker, some of the hills around Swansea try and kill me on a regular basis.

I've got 4 options of Cassette:
11-25
11-28
12-25
12-27

And on Chainset I've got:

35/50 and 39/53 with compact or not.

I just honestly have no idea what they mean by that.

The custom configuration is nice IF you know exactly what you want, and it is overwhelming if you don't.

The Ribble summer deal on the Evo Pro Carbon for £999 is a spectacular deal, and all decisions made. Look for reviews on it, and you will find much positive press.

Gearing is very personal. A standard crankset is 53/39, a compact is 50/34. IMO, the only significant difference is the 16 tooth jump of a compact doesn't shift as smoothly as the 14 tooth standard. You may get easier gears with a compact, you may not.

The cassette numbers are smallest and biggest cogs, so think hardest and easiest effort. Wider may look better on paper, but the larger # spread means bigger gaps each time you shift. So a 12-25 makes a nice pairing with either crank. An 11-25 does as well, but means you will lose a gear in the middle, as both sets only have 10 cogs.

The lower the ratio, the lower the gearing, the easier it will be to climb a hill. I'd go with the 50-34 compact crankset and the 11-28 or 12-27 cassette.

That would give you a gear range of 50-11 down to 34-28.

If you play with this gear calculator, it will help you understand the gear ratios better. You can select the option to show your speed at a certain rate of pedalling.

https://sheldonbrown.com/gears/

In the highest gear of 50 (big ring up front) and 12 (smallest cog in the back), you would be going almost 20mph at a pedalling cadence of 60rpm.

In the lowest gear of 34 and 27, you'd be going 5.9 mph at 60rpm.

Go Swans!!

I just tried to send both of you a individual thank you message via PM but it wouldn't let me because I have less then 50 posts.

Thank you, that's really very helpful.
