CA had a hard winter. We are still cleaning up and repairing stuff. So is CalTrans, on Highway 1, where there is a major slide that closed the road to cars at Lucia. Usually, this means bikes as well, but in 2017, when the bridge failed at Big Sur, the stretch of highway between there and Lucia was open to bikes. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to ride this with few cars, so I did it. Twice.

I was poking around Google Maps, and if you want to travel by car from Big Sur to Ragged Point, it routes you inland on the 101:



Now, when you do this for bike, rather than car, navigation, something different happens:



Here is a close-up of the closure area:



Anyone know if it is indeed possible to do what Google Maps indicates?

I'm seriously tempted to try an exploratory mission...

I recently came back from a Seattle to LA tour. I took the ACA detour, but I spoke with a couple of people who made it through the closure at separate times.

There are also posts on ****** about this.

However, it is officially closed to cyclists and pedestrians as well as motorists

From what I was told you will not be allowed to pass and need to wait to approach the closure until the guard is gone for the night (around 6:30) You will need to walk the bike for a 1/2 mile over a dirt section that could be sloppy if wet.

​​​​​​One couple needed to continue riding after dark to reach an open campground.

All of this could have changed in 2 weeks.

Thanks. That is exceptionally helpful. I think I will give it a try (I'm reasonably close by.) It is hot and dry here now.

I think so. I never got a chance to sneak in. We are likely going to have a strong El Nino this winter, so it could get worse before it gets better/officially passable.
