If a belt drive Pinion strikes your fancy, consider the Priority 600. The price point is amazing for all that is included. Based on our recommendation, friend just purchased one to use as his around town bike in the Chicago area. He is happy with the purchase, as was my husband.

this uses the 12 speed pinion, but has a very versatile gear inch range, if this info is accurate--

The Priority 600 gear-inches go from 17 to 105. I consider that a great range for touring. Gears-inches for the 12 gears: 17, 20, 24, 28, 34, 39, 46, 55, 65, 76, 89, 105

the percentage jumps are a bit higher than the 14 speed rohlof, and a 18 speed pinion would be even better.

again, I like looking at these technologies more out of curiosity and admiration of the technology, but not realistically considering them just because of the money involved.

Pinion has the P Line and C Line gears. The P Line is their better version and comes in 12 speed and 18 speed gear ranges. The C Line comes in 6, 9 and 12 speed gear ranges. I believe Co-Motion sales the P Line on their bicycles. If Priority has a frame size that will fit someone close enough then this could be a good option even though they use the C line 12 speed gearbox on three of their models. There newest model has electric shift and was on preorder the last time I looked. The more inexpensive model is a commuter and comes with fenders and lights. The other two are more for dirt riding. I purchased a custom bicycle from Co-Motion because I had some wants and needs that couldn't be met with a production bicycle. If the OP wants a custom fit bicycle then going with Co-Motion can be a good option. The Rohloff version of the Pangea weighed around 1/2 a Kilo more than the pangea with derailleurs when I purchased it. The 18 speed Pinion version weighs a Kilo more than the Rohloff version. Co-Motion hadn't offered the Pinion the year I purchased my bike.

When I think of Pinion, I just automatically think of the 18 speed, as if I got one that is what I would want. When I first got my Rohloff, I wished the gears were closer together, as they are on my other bikes with derailleurs. But I got used to the slightly wider gearing pretty soon. But the 12 speed pinion is wider than the Rohloff, wide enough that I would be disappointed.

I should have mentioned this earlier to the OP, this link describes a trip by a Pinion owner, I think with a Co-Motion.

My Tandem has the 26" wheels just like my rohloff single. The lowest gear on the Tandem is a 24" gear. I was used to this when I bought the Rohloff so the gear jumps on the Rohloff never felt to large to me. The Pinion 18 speed is the one I would get if I were to purchase another bike. I do agree with you on this. more range and smaller gear jumps sounds good.

The OP is a tall guy. Stay away from stupid steep slope little frames like Priority has.
Checkout the YT guy > The Outside Perks. He has a really tall custom Co-Mo pinion. Detailed discussion of his bike and too tight belt problems. Pretty good videos of his Oregon trips.

Thanks for the advice. I have seen that YT and it echoes what other's say about proper gates belt tension. I am not well versed on frame geometry, what is a frame's "steep slope" and how does it affect riding vs taller rider? Thanks again.

Apparently big changes are coming next year for Pinion gear boxes. This link is two months old, but I was not aware of it earlier.
