49x15, 700c wheels, 175mm cranks. I can do 22-23mph ok, 25-26 when I push it. I suffer on big hills, but since NYC is such a fun place to be, I hardly notice.

Agree with Akogan 48 / 16 is perfect. I live in a hilly area nothing flat here.
That ratio carves you out of steel. Have 2 fixed gear bikes one for treating bad and a track bike for breaking my arms. this is a good ratio but its not fast enough for me , im thinking of going for a 52 / 16. for ludicrous speed. Hills will be horrible

I bought the 41 a few years ago for an ill-conceived magic gear conversion project. Good quality ring (Rocket Ring, now sold as Origin8 I think). It's on my SSCX and 41x16 or 17 freewheel is a good race gear for me. I put a 15t fixed cog on the flip side for commuting/riding around.

I use 46/18.
It's a Taiwan Raleigh CroMo tank, 27" wheels 40 spoke rear 36 front, flipped up road bars, front reverse (bullhorn) brake lever, platform pedals.
I threw this together from the parts bin, using a cog on the freewheel hub with a BB lock ring and threadlocker, I put the chain ring on the backside of the crank with track bolts.
I'm over 60 and over 230 lbs. I just wanted to try a fixie and ride on paved flat bike paths. I ride local streets too. I still can't do tricks (skids, hops, etc.). I need my brake. I hate hills, they hurt.
People look at me like I'm homeless when I ride because of the bars. The paint is too shiny though, needs some nasty-fication.
I LOVE THIS BIKE. It appeals to the inner iconoclastic child in me. I feel like I'm teasing the dog again. Good ride too.

From all the range of answers, it's clear that gearing is entirely a personal choice. My two cents: I run 48/18 with 170 cranks. Sure I'd climb better with 36/18, but then ya' gotta' go downhill.

I was running 48 x 19 on the Hillbrick, but I've just changed her to 48 x 14 ... mind you, that's with the S3X rear hub and I've got her set to give me similar gearing to before in 2nd gear with 1st getting me down the big hills and 3rd giving me fewer excuses for failing to get back up them.
