Assault really, honestly?!
After the LA Circuit race today a CAT 5 rider hit another 5 rider in the face with his cleat! Left a huge gash in the mans face, then there was a brawl. I believe both guys went down in a crash during the race. The rider who assaulted the other rider did it because he was mad about the other rider causing the crash I assume.
Anyway it ended with the rider who hit the rider in the face with the shoe getting hauled off to jail in his team kit, cuffed. This is the second damn fight of the season, does this stuff happen where you live?

Ugh it happened here at the Circuit race (took place adjacent to LAX) and it happened at Long Beach, the LB fight was just a fist fight this was assault with a weapon.
What a way to get hauled off to jail, in your full team kit.

The fights are so vicious because the stakes are so low.

I mean we all enter races knowing there's a chance we could crash, unless someone pulls a Cinzano on you there's no reason to fight, and on top of that there's never a reason to assault someone .

My friends came out to this race because it was my first local one and late in the day. They had this idea about cycling being a pretty wussy type thing. After watching the attacks my team did, the crashes then a fight like that they were pretty shocked. They left with a pretty different idea about cycling.

We had two guys here last year yelling at each other (right after the final sprint) after the weekly training crit. One guy apparently blocked the other guy in the sprint. They were both 4s. I told them both to STFU before I beat both of their asses. You'd have thought this was a career changing race...they both finished in the back of the pack and it is a friggin training crit!!!

It was my best race of the season I found some sort of untapped energy and attacked off the front every lap and still managed to finish 21st. My team threw out attack after attack it was good times. Only bad part was they didn't get my number on the camera and i missed the window to get it corrected. There were two unidentified riders, one at 15th i think and the other at 21st I'm pretty sure I'm 21st.

Yes indeed, smacking another cyclist in the face with your bike shoe would certainly qualify as felony assault. Something to bear in mind.

wow! i missed that. i stayed to collect my prize money and watched the finish of both cat 5 races. i saw a couple of guys go down across from the s/f line, they both got up and walked calmly over to the announcers booth, i don't think it was them. i didn't see a crash in the finish of either race that i remember

I've always wondered how effective a cycling shoe would be as a weapon. I guess I saw it this afternoon. The best part was when the assaulted guy's girlfriend(?) kicked the assaulter in the face when he was being held down. Awesome!
Or was the best part when the assaulted threw the assaulter's shoes over the fence? I can't decide!

What really sucked was that they shortened the course by a mile. The run down to the finish was only 1/2 mile. Kind of a bummer as it Rendered any of the ideas I had after last year useless.

The guy with the shoe was wearing a yellow/white kit with Cynergy on the leg. I've never even seen that kit before, but I bet he won't be wearing it in the future.
I didn't stick around for the cuffing. Too hungry.

I had friends there and got distracted and ended up going to check the scores way too late (and i was put up there as unidentifiable and it was too late to get it corrected), on the way I saw the police cuffing him.

Two of my teammates did their first races ever in the 5b's and said the unattached dude was really sketchy and caused that second crash. Still, didn't deserve that. Maybe he learned something, though!

Well, it's another race under your belt. Sucks to do all that work and not even be credited for it, but I'm sure the officials will accept it come upgrade time. Remember, you can't take cat5 races too seriously - you might get a cleat in the side of the head.
