Brake pad "wings"
What are these "wings" for on these type brake pads? Is it just cosmetic/design?I

They are vestigial wheel guides, intended to speed placing a wheel back in after changing a flat (from racing, of course).

wschruba and nomadmax hit the nail on the head (and the video was excellent I love watching quick wheel changes pretty much on anything.
Don't buy knockoff Shimano pads, get the real thing! However spend a little more on Swisstop and you will have excellent pads which will give you better braking performance without having to spend a lot of money. Brake pads and new cables and housing are a cheap way to make cheaper brakes and levers perform much better.
If you already have similar pad holders/shoes just get a set of new pads and you don't need the full shoe and you will save money there plus you might not even need to do any adjustment you can just slide in the new pads and boom you are ready to ride. (assuming they are set up correctly in the first place)

Well I’ll be. I always wondered why that wa like that. I like Shimano brakes. I have ultegra and I think they are really good.
