Bike Touring in the Rain a El Nino Year of Rain Storms???

I never did Bike Touring in the Heavy Rain in the Southwest of USA in Southern California and 2015 is the year of El Nino Weather in North America? and Winters in Southern Calfornia it does Rain a lot and Snows in the Mtn in Southern California

I do have Rain Gear Showerpass and Ortlieb BackRoller Rear Panniers and Arkel Orca 35 Front Panniers both waterproof on my Surly LHT 26in 52cm 2008 and I have Stealth Bike Camping in San Diego, California and I also know not to Camp in Dry river beds and
spots that that water wash away dirt...

The secret for me and wife on a rainy Vermont bicycle tour back in about '89 was, Gore-Tex... also good is wool and tights with rainproof front panels to break the wind.

Looks like you've already got ~3/4s at least of good equipment for the rain. Fenders, right? Rainy-type chain lube. Hood for jacket? I had a pair of those solid-front type tights that worked pretty good esp for colder temps. I would take full rain pants though probably if heavy rain was in the forecast.

Why not just come north this year? El Nino tend to give drier winters to far NorCal and Oregon, although there haven't been enough of them to really make solid predictions.

Of course the last decent El Nino found me spending the winter being rained on in California while my friends in Oregon were revelling in a sunny winter.

There are old riders, there are bold riders, but their are no bold old riders. Use your brain & get off the road when you think it migh be unsafe. If you think it is, it in all probilly is.

you should know enough by living there, 1, don't camp in a dry river bed. it may have a flash flood from a storm in the mountains far away .

When you're living outside, the bad weather days allow you to really appreciate the beautiful ones. Remember you always have the option of staying home and watching TV.

If you have been homeless for 7 years, you should be an expert on dealing with bad weather.

My point was many of us on this site would rather be outside touring than watching TV.

As far as your circumstance I kinda thought you were more of a home-free guy vs a home-less guy. If you're homeless and don't want to be, than this is probably not the best site for that type of support. No matter what, I was not making fun of you, so relax.

For what it's worth, I remember several of the past heavy El Nino rainfall years in San Diego having very dry Decembers, but then the storms really started rolling in during January, then continuing longer than normal through May. Due to a subtropical connection, many of those storms were relatively warm and wet, such as 65-70 F day and night.

Working the carnival circuit is a very strange life style, worked with a reporter friend of mine for about 21 days doing a story about the life of a carnival worker. Long hours, dangerious work setting up & tearing down rides, etc. For very little money when you looked at the hours worked. Some of the workers had figured out how to skim money, now apprently itechnology, tickets, and tokens have replace the average worker touching cash. So little money touchs hands with the exception of a few key trusted employees.

But then, there was that 100-year storm 3 days before Christmas, 2010.

As a Disabled Veteran I have to use a bicycle as my primary means of transportation. In years past I spent a lot of time climbing and backpacking in the Pacific Northwest. You could expect days and maybe weeks of constant rain and/or damp foggy weather. With the right gear you should be more than capable of weathering the storm. I always stayed dry and warm - important to avoid hypothermia, which can happen at even moderate temperatures. Water is a extremely efficient conductor sapping the body of heat. The greatest loss is from the head. Stay dry to stay warm and keep your head protected.

Good luck!

Yup, the nicest rain jacket doesn't help too much if there's rain dripping down the neck into inner garments.

You've been homeless for 7years, you are on both SSi and SSDi, but you perform manual labor jobs, and you are fit enough to bike tour for extended periods of time?

That's confusing, if accurately summed up.

Keep on keepin on, I guess.

2010-11 and 2014-15 were not El Nino years. After the wet December in 2010, San Diego had almost no rain at all during January through mid February, though.

What I'm remembering is the pattern such as that for the last very strong years in 1997-98 or 82-83, just a few rainy days in December as compared to many more in January.
