Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". CX Gear Inch Range

Hi,
I'm building my first Cyclocross bike and am wondering what gear inch range would be ideal. I'm building it up as a 1x10.
Would 40-80 be sufficient? 30-100? I'm medium build and only mildly athletic btw.
I've been going over all kinds of chainring and cassette options on Sheldon Brown's site but am unsure of where to start without too much trial and error.

Thanks,
Scott

I like to spin. But I tend to race with 36x28. Grass just isn't a fast surface. I basically only use the 46t chainring for fast asphalt (or maybe fast gravel).

Hi Chas - 36x28 ? a 2x setup? I'm confused as to what you mean.

Where in MI are you? I live in Royal Oak and am thinking of trying the Mad Anthony this year

I run 1x 42x11-28 or 11-32 depending on the course. Anything steeper and sustained is faster to get off and run, or traction will be the limiting factor.

Thanks Redlude - that helps alot. I have a 42t up front and an 11-46 in the back because I had it already but don't feel like I need anything over 34 or so. I would rather have a closer gear range than something so wide but wanted some opinions before giving up too much.

I wouldn't bother changing it for just one race. And heck...larger tooth jumps might even be nice, just to get up and down the gear range with fewer cog jumps.
