I have learned a lot about cycling and wrenching on bikes over the last year from two sources, Bike Forums and R.J. The Bike Guy. Serious injury that could have been worse.

I did something similar last year, but a mere shoulder separation occured. Keep your focus when riding out there, folks.

Wow, and after all that, he sat down and edited/produced the video. That's dedication.

I've never been seriously hurt on a wipe-out, but one thing I could relate to was just how many thoughts you can have as you're actually in the process of crashing. There's really a time slowing down sensation as you fall to the ground that is very weird.
One interesting thing is that his familiarity with the trail actually led to the accident--he went the wrong way by force of habit.

Six years ago I crashed and broke my neck. C1 & C2 fused. Back on the bike 3 months later and now better than ever. You can do it. Sorry for your troubles but there is hope.

Non omnino gravis
Complacency is a killer-- both of my most recent crashes were 100% my fault. Crossing over spots I'd crossed dozens, if not hundreds of time before, only on those fateful days I wasn't as vigilant as usual. Dropped the front tire in a rut on a fire road after a fresh rain, Catch 22-- no rain, no rut, no crash, but it did rain and I crashed on ground about as hard as a firm mattress. I got lucky. No cars, bikes, or people around either time, so "the guard was down."
RJ may be in for a long haul- my sister-in-law fractured 3 thoracic vertebrae in a bike crash a few years back, and was completely out of the saddle for almost a year. She is admittedly built about as tough as a Faberge egg, but rate of recovery seems almost random.

Complacency sent me head over bars at a railroad crossing.
With me, complacency and fatigue leading to accidents are perfectly correlated.

He's fortunate, indeed. Sometimes the helmet doesn't help. We lost a friend several years ago in a low speed cycling accident. His wheel caught in a storm grate, throwing him over the bars. His spinal cord severed upon impact and he died a few days later. I wear my helmet, even though there's no guarantee of protection.

He's taught me SO much about bicycle repair and maintenance. From when he was using improvised tools to his more professional videos. The guy loves bikes- and loves showing people how to fix them.
Best wishes and speedy recovery to him!

Yikes. After two serious back and neck injuries I'm not sure I want to watch that video. But I'll leave a comment on his Facebook and YouTube pages.

I wish him all the best. Nasty deal. Godspeed on the return.
That said, a couple of observations after watching the video twice. Who built that bridge with 1 inch wide longitudinal gaps, a road tire width? Lots of people riding road bikes these days on dirt trails. Never seen a bridge without side rails, but I'm not a mtn biker, must be a mtn thing.
The nice and helpful other cyclist, no helmet, but flip flops, really?
Never seen that on rides I do. I am glad he came along, though.
I admit, one day after wrenching on the bike, I took a quick test ride - in my flip flops, on spd pedals (!). But I went to get my helmet, since I didn't trust the mechanics job.
Take care, JR. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the great how-to videos!

Well, that's unfortunate. It looked like a fairy clean roll in the video; but if he hit hard enough to break that helmet that way, that's pretty serious. I'm glad I was wearing mine on my last few spills. My head hit the ground pretty hard both times, but no harm done.

So sorry to hear and get well.
One word of hope I am within 10 days of release after L5-S1 spinal surgery and they can do amazing things today with robotics. Yes, you have to figure out what the new normal is and it does take time, but to be functional where our great-grandparents had to hunch and walk with a cane in pain is something they could only dream of.
As I say hold onto hope.

His doctor said that his helmet saved his life. I've been thinking it should be safe enough for me to ride trails without a helmet. Now I know I've been thinking wrong. It's a good thing I didn't try that.
