That's what's called an adjustable reach stem.

Jeez, it's probably been like that since it was assembled at the store. I couldn't see someone taking it off and doing it on purpose. They probably never had a clue, lol.,,,,BD

Hey! (OK, this question will nominate me for numbskull of the day)... Why is this such a bad idea? Is it unsafe? I'm thinking of all the used bikes out there that some women can't ride because they have such a short torso. Wouldn't putting on the stem backwards solve this problem?

Look again closely.

Not only is the stem backwards... which I really have no issue with. If it works, do it.

Look at the bars! Instead of them being swept backwards...as most are. Thesr are sweeping forewards and the brake levers are just turned around. Gee at least rotate the bar too.

I actually considered reversing the stem on a 56cm Peugeot I bought thats too big for me. There is just a lack of vintage road bikes in 52cm in my area.

But I finally decided that I would look like a goon, so I am just using the tops until I can find a bike my size.

since when were you actually worried about looking like a goon? None of us that have bikes with milk crates should worry about that anymore. the first rule in my book is function over fashion. especially when it's someone else's opinion

No racing stripes, but perhaps some umm...remnants from beer?

Interesting, the things people sell... .

I dunno ... those forks might be bent, but what is happening with those bars and stem I'm going to have to write off as a photographic anomoly or something to do with the tubing being at Infinity ...

I may be wrong, but i would think that a backwards stem would make the bike handle kinda funny. Sort of like the feeling of riding in the very front of a bus when you are ahead of the front wheels, the sensation of turning feels foreign.

He's selling the bike because it's less than an inch too small? I have bikes ranging 2 1/2 inches of difference that I can ride comfortably through seat and handlebar adjustment? Sounds like another "Oh crap did I really spend that much on my bike." refugee.,,,,BD

yea, besides looking the the numbskull of the day, this is something I thought about before I decided not to try to reverse the stem.

This is by far the best one I've seen yet:
https://classifieds.castanet.net/show...128206/cat/122

Description: Brand New Racing Bicycle.

N E G O T I A B L E
call me: 469-xxxx!

All Aluminum frame - extremely light. Shimano components.
Never used.
Bought new last year at Costco.
My idea is getting 750.00 for this new bike - taxes included.

VP Pedals and Profile Design Triathlon Bar - outfitted by Fresh Air Experience.
( See second bicycle in picture)

1100,00 for this other bike or 1750,00 for both ( his n hers??).

Also available new - never used Diadora Shoes size 10,5 - 11
