Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

None of us should ever have to experience that. Now go and heal up.

This is terrible news. Any idea how long in the hospital? Sound like months of rehab coming up too.

More than likely the old lady in the accident will be forced to live with that vision the rest of her life.
Too many of us F-around in the car instead of watching the road.

That sucks like a black hole.

But I'm glad to hear you've escaped being completely swallowed. After this terrible luck, may you get all the best.

As someone who has fought back from life-threatening ilness, I can at least hold out the promise that on the other side every day will seem just a bit more precious.

Get well soon,

Randochap

I wish you a speedy recovery. It;s been a little over a year that I was hot from behind, the car was traveling at about 45 mph. Needless to say your unjuries are way more severe. I had multiple contusions and road rash on 90% of my body, and they had to re-attach my right ear, but not one broken bone. I'm back on my bike and training for a four day ride across Illinois for Illinois C.O.P.S I was reluctant to ride on the street, but I hope you will return to the road ASAP.

I hope you're able to mentally get back on the bike. Don't rush it.

They should ban dogs and cell phone use from a motor vehicle. I see way too many people riding around with their dog in their lap....and I mean on the drivers' side.

Does this mean once you recover you're going to start more threads about bikes you were going to purchase but you didn't because you have uncovered some big manufacturer scam?

I certainly hope so.

Get well soon my little phardling.

God Pharding, I hurt just reading about the accident. Get well soon and I wish you luck and a speedy recovery.

I'm from the Chicago area, but I didn't start riding until I moved down here. I really never seen to many people riding up there. What area were you in when this happened?

To wit: I was riding my bicycle on a relatively quiet country road the other day. A plumber's van passes me. As he rolls away from me, he wanders completely into the oncoming lane, as if he's blind drunk. He stops texting (or whatever he was doing) long enough to correct this state of affairs within a few seconds, before another car appeared coming towards him. This is @ 9AM on a weekday morning. I'm sure he was just using a cellphone or texting and got distracted.

How scary are these people to cyclists?

Very glad you were able to survive this and write one of the most compelling posts I've seen on BF. Horrific accident, but glad you're pulling through. Get well now, all the other crap will get sorted in time.
