Rolling coal

Is a term I’ve learned from assorted cycling websites.

Happened to me on Sunday heading west on Jerusalem Ave. in N Wantagh (Long Island, NY)

Seems it’s “fun” for owners of diesel pickup truck drivers to modify their trucks to enable black smoke to come out of the smoke stacks. This driver, having just passed me, slowed, revved the engine and sent out a big cloud of black smoke. I was fortunate that he stopped a good distance up the road and that the winds were hard out of the south.

I’ve read about and that’s it’s an obnoxious thing to do to pedestrians and cyclists. More common in locations where these kinds of pickups are common, like Alabama, Texas, Suffolk.......

3 years of riding, new one for me.

Gross, lucky you dodged it. I have yet to have that happen. I have been pleasantly surprised when I had a loud diesel pull out and accelerate infront of me - only to have no smoke or smell thanks to the DEF system.

Yeah, it happens. Thousands of cars pass me safely and don't make a big deal about it, but now and then someone has to make a point by rolling coal or something. It's a statement of some kind, I suppose, but I don't know what it's supposed to say.

For what it's worth, I don't think Suffolk County is worse than average. I've seen this kind of behavior pretty much everywhere where I've ridden. It's infrequent, and in the long run it's pretty harmless, but it sure can ruin your attitude for a while.

Apparently, the US EPA has already found having such a vehicle modified to be able to do this is illegal, as it violates the Clean Air Act. If you had a camera and could capture the registration / license plate of that vehicle, you could file a police report. (Being a federal violation, I'd think that'd be a "big deal".)

Step 1. Vote for guy that's about "law and order".
Step 2. Complain about protesters and have a desire to plow them over with your car (and try to codify it into law to allow it).
Step 3. Engage in an illegal form of protest by modifying your vehicle to "roll coal" at people you don't like and give the finger to "the man" at the EPA.

Some states have made it illegal at the state level. E.g., CO, MD and NJ.

A ban at the state level in NY has been proposed:

It's loudly announcing that the driver has a very small penis and is extremely insecure and afraid of the world.

Glad I could help.
