Changed from 6 to 7 speed. Lots of Skipping?
After switching from 6 spd FW to a 7spd FW, I have a lot more trouble switching gears, especially around the 3rd and 4th gear. The chain jumps back and forth if the shifter isn't in the exact right spot. It just seems that the window/margin for error is much smaller now.
It makes sense that the window would be slighter smaller but I wouldn't have thought it'd be detectable and certainly not significantly more sensitive.
The only other thing I changed out was the chain, which is 7 speed compatible. The new FW has a wider range but nothing drastic (11-21 vs 11-25).
I have friction shifters.
Any thoughts? Is this normal? Thanks!

Who makes a freewheel with an 11 tooth small cog?
Regardless, not normal. The difference in spacing between 6 speed and 7 speed is small enough that nothing should change. Biggest issue is usually chain rub between the smallest cog and the right dropout. Sure you used a modern 6-7-8 speed chain?

I had a similar issue when I changed from seven to eight. My solution was a higher quality rear derailleur. I also straightened the slightly bent derailleur hanger--have you checked that?

all new parts ? New, not used freewheel? got a 5~8 speed chain , also new ?
It should work , did you check the derailleur hanger alignment ? [shop service - tool ]
well yea, the idea is a 7th cog added in a frame spacing for 6 ,(126) so the difference is measurable...

I often use kmc 9-speed chains with my sunrace 7-speed freewheels. It's not wholly necessary. You can make an 8-speed chain work. But I usually find a 9-speed chain works a little better. I get them new on ebay.

There’s no need for fear, 7-speed is easy to debug in indexed or friction mode. I would start with RD hanger alignment and cable housing. As with other posters, I’m curious which freewheel the OP is using: new, or a custom assembly that might not have all the correct spacers.
