What is this thing on Miyata 600GT's seatstay?

A knob-like thing that must be there for some reason, but how are you supposed to use this?



Edit: No, I don't intend to use it with this chain. Think of it as a placeholder.

Slip the chain on it when you take the rear wheel off.

My Miyata has one... I always thought it was a clever way to hang the chain there while you're removing the rear wheel.

If you are changing a flat on the side of the road, you can use a stick to lift the chain onto the peg. The wheel will come off and go back on without you having to get greasy fingers.

In theory I can see that, but in practise seems the tire interferes with the front of the fender in a way that would be a non-issue if the freewheel would freewheel both ways.

The paint gets chipped off by the chain and then you get rust. I don't use the one on my Bridgestone for that reason.
