I didn't want to hijack the thread about general diets - but the burrito for lunch sounded like such a good idea for something to haul on a bike I was wondering what other good eats people pack for lunch.

Whatever leftovers are in the fridge, a container of yogurt and a thermos of coffee.

Once every couple of weeks I pack oatmeal, granola bars, etc. so I don't have to worry about making something every day. I'm lazy and cheap. But you're right...burritos sound very good.

My daily lunch is a ziploc sandwich bag stuffed with spinach, romaine, some lunchmeat, and berries. Along with that, I bring along 3 or 4 pieces of whole fruit (banana, pear, apple, peach, ...). At the office, I often buy a 20 oz. bottle of pop and add some hot sauce or jalapeno peppers to the salad.

usually whatever I, or my wife, made the night before. I am a big fan of cooking extra, and then bringing the rest for lunch. Usually, my wife will cook a couple meals on the weekend for me during the week as well.

I also keep a stash of Kashi bars and GoLean, as well as Oatmeal in the office. If I am really hungry, I will get something from the cafeteria.

Yep, usually leftovers or a salad with some chicken, turkey, or ham (I am one meat-eating hippie!) though we have burritos/tacos often enough in my house that the makings often are the leftovers! With just a four mile ride and liking to get a jump on the traffic in the incessant fog around here, I usually tote my breakfast as well - yogurt, fruit and granola and make coffee as soon as I get in.

Lately, a bottle of nonfat milk to drink when I get to work.

For lunch, I can get a bowl of hot black beans, a big bag of fresh restaurant corn chips, and lots of great, fresh salsa for $1.35, to which I add my own grated cheese. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...

Sometimes I get a Shawarma wrap when I want to splurge. I have been known to eat a pub burger and fries...

My wife cooks extra for dinner, so whatever I had the night before. Invest in tupperware!

I keep a stash of somewhat healthy munchies at work as well, along with gatorade powder.

I love Indian food.
I've made a deal with the Hindu couple that owns the Subway restaurant.
I take my Mr. Bento and ten bucks by the Subway and she takes it home and fills it with the leftovers of the food she cooks for her family.
I pick it up at the subway and in a few days repeat the process.

I live less than a mile from work. I just go home. It is perhaps the perfect setup. I can eat a turkey sandwich or grill a burger.

I am so jealous. Many years ago, I worked part time at an Indian food restaurant in Iowa City (Masala) *just* so I could get free food. As I recall, they didn't even really pay me an actual regular wage -- just a LOT of food, which was happily et.

My lunch, morning and afternoon snacks sounds like Noah's Ark. Two sandwiches, two apples, two oranges, two granola bars, two trail mix bars.

+1 on the leftovers or something cheap. Remember at the end of the day it all makes a turd, it was just cheaper to make my turd than the guy that goes to Chili's everyday for lunch.

Food for thought

Lately my commute has increased from 18 miles RT to 56 miles RT. I still pack the same lunch. A turkey and swiss sandwich with our garden lettuce on whole wheat, banana, some sort of cookies or an energy bar for on the way home, a bottle of Gatorade, three jugs of water and that's about it. I have coffee at work and good water however I will sometimes take an extra banana or an apple on the long days.

Mostly leftovers.
Tomorrow will be
-mandarin orange cup I stole from my son
-non fat yogurt strawberry
-an apple
-a hamburger bun
-leftover bbq potroast meat.
-bag of popcorn for desk reserves

No one else in my family likes leftovers. I love them.

I want to pack my lunch to save money. I haven't figured out what I can make that will taste good but I got an idea from a vegetarian cooking podcast recently. I tried it and it was pretty good. Sandwich on bagel with hummus, roasted sunflower seeds, sliced tomatos and cucumbers.

All the foods wrapped up in some kind of dough are good. The OP's burritos sounded great and the Indian food comments made me think of samosas. Sometimes I get Alexandrian eggplant wraps from Mrs. Seif at the Lansing City Market.

Here in Michigan we like pasties--steak, potatoes, rutabagas and gravy all wrapped in pastry. The Cornish miners in the UP invented them because you can carry them in your pocket and they're still warm when the lunch whistle blows.

If I'm in a hurry I'll stop for a sub at Jommy John's. They make them "so fast you'll freak."

Either leftovers, or some of these Tasty Bites. Except, I buy them at Trader Joes and they are marketed as Indian Fare. I also bring some rice to put it on. For snacks I will bring fresh fruit and penut butter or whole almonds.

EDIT- I also usually pack a couple of Lara Bars, but those are for while I am riding.
