woman's 3-speed gear cable slipping
Cant seem to make the 'hose clamp' tight enough, and occasionally when I go to switch the gears, the cable slips through.
Not sure if I need to replace the gear gable, as it is worn some at that clamp point, and also has some gashes slightly higher up. Reason I woudn't want to replace it is that I don't know where to find the right color to match the brake cables (slightly yellow patina from age).

As teetime said, you need a fulcrum sleeve (the metal band) and the fulcum which is a plastic or metal insert the stops the cable housing but allows the cable to move. You can get them at any bicycle shop worth its salt, or on line. The picture below is from the Gentleman Cyclist who is an oline sell and has both.

I have fixed this problem on a couple of older 3speeds by replacing this setup with Suntour cable guide like this one.

You can pick these up for a couple of bucks at just about any bike shop or coop for a couple of bucks and they work better than the original setup with the clamp and sleeve. There is probably someone here who has a extra one they would let you have for basically shipping cost, I dont have one in parts bin right now or would offer it to you.
