1. Livia Soprano, The Sopranos
2. Cersei Lannister, Game of Thrones
3. Lori Grimes, The Walking Dead

Dishonorable Mention: almost all of the mothers on The Wire.

What about that morbidly obese southern woman who was on some dreadful reality tv show that featured her child?

Maybe Mrs Cartman from South Park? (She was on the cover of Crack Wh### Magazine...)

  • Livia Drusilla, I Claudius. Probably the inspiration for Tony Soprano's mom. Sian Phillips has a knack for playing archly beautiful and horrible women.
  • Sheila Broflovski, South Park. How many moms can start an international war over a cartoon about fart jokes?
  • Every mom on Peanuts. What the hell is wrong with those parents? They're never around and when they are it's just blah-blah-blah.

Why is it that I've never seen any of the shows mentioned so far? Except Charlie Brown specials, of course. Otherwise, I'm zero for about 15, above...

If you were to watch only one, sit down and go through The Wire. It is one of the greatest TV series of all time. Top 3.

It ranks up in the top tier along with Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Half Hour TV shows, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, Dexter, Justified, and Boardwalk Empire.

Not necessarily the worst, but Edwina on AbFab (Absolutely Fabulous), a British comedy series. And worthy of mention, Mary Hartman.

These shows are all "fiction"... unless one is doing reality TV, and then it may still not be reality.

However, I have to wonder if many of the dysfunctional mothers are part of dysfunctional families. So, in Married with Children, it is not just one person that is dysfunctional, but the whole fictional family unit.

In the case of Roseanne, I believe you are conflating the actress's miserable real life act, with the role she played on the TV show.

Samantha was a terrible parent. That little Tabatha was a real witch.

Endora was pretty bad too.

Didn't she sell her daughter for drugs in Morocco? That's pretty bad.
