Marlin vs x caliber

Hey guys, I知 in the market for a 29er. I got about 600-800$ to spend. I知 gonna be riding mostly trails and use it also as a work commuter. I can get a used x caliber for roughly 500-900 or a new marlin. What would be the better buy? Also, I知 only familiar with treks, I知 open to other brands as well. And lastly, I don稚 mind a project. I can put on a 1x drivetrain and better fork down the road.
