First spring MTB ride - need some spare ribs

First decent ride for about 6 months - out in the forest by myself on a sunny spring morning - was about 8km into the ride, just passed a black snake on the trail, came to a technical bit of single track where a concrete pipe culverty crosses a dry creekbed. I used to get off and leg it over this - lately I've been jumping the front wheel up & over, often thinking to myself how ugly it could get in a stack.

This ride I found out, it's a slow ride up one side of the creekbed over big flat rocks, a sharp left over the pipe, then another sharp left down the other side.

Anyway - slow speed front wheel stoppage, unco flip over the bars - full impact with my chest on the edge of the pipe.

three broken ribs - punctured lung - hard to imagine that damage at such a slow speed. 3 days in hospital, morphine, ECG's ultrasounds, CT scan, chest x-rays.

Bummer - back on the road bike for a while

OUCH! That landing sounded a bit on the painful side. How far did you have to hike out to get help? Could you even hike out?

On the plus side, morphine can be fun

Bummer dude, it is surprising what can happen, ESPECIALLY at slow speeds. We all have our stories! Heal fast and get riding.

Wow, what a drag! This will undoubtedly cross my mind next time I encounter the concrete features at my local trail. Best of luck for a speedy recovery, man!

Healing vibes, man. Was there two years ago, courtesy my first BMX race. You are going to instantly feel SO good when they take that damn tube out of your chest.
