Duct tape is one of those tools that goes 95% of the way to fixing a job... but then the job is 95% done correctly which means the 5% that is wrong causes major problems later on, just like people using pliers to adjust spokes (like a recent Home Depot commercial... made my OCP-ness go off when I saw that.)

If its a real duct, use aluminum flashing tape that can stand the hot air without igniting. If its a vacuum hose, replace it. If its a wheel liner, spend the cash and get one that is right and won't ruin the wheel by leaving gunk in there. If its an injury, use bandages which are sterile and intended for long term contact with human skin... etc... etc...

I have one roll of duct tape, but I rarely use it, as I use other items which get the job done correctly. For example, boxes get packing tape, etc.

Its the same with WD-40. If I need to loosen a bolt, I have penetrating oil. If I need to degrease, I have Simple Green. If I need to lubricate a lock, I use a light Teflon oil which doesn't gunk up the tumblers and stays slippery even after the carrier evaporates. If I need to put oil on a sword, I use linseed oil or something similar.

I once made a beer cozy for a 40 using only duct tape and small broken up bits of styrofoam.

To make it look a little fancier my buddy gave me a Lucky Lager "One 'L' of a beer" sticker that he carefully peeled on a refrigerator at the dump.

It's the most white trash, redneck thing I've ever made and it was awesome.

I have a roll of "Funky Flamingo" Duck-brand duct tape. As has been mentioned, it doesn't seem to work all that well. If I recall, Nashua is good stuff.

I wonder if this is any good:

it seems to lack that belkoved fibrous network embedded in most silver tapes...

gaff is prolly the best, black gaff is beyond ordinary duct tapes.

Yeah - picture this......

I'm 18 or so, a 1st baseman, playing in a baseball game. The inside seam of my pants rip, and a quick search of the locker room reveals only a roll of duct tape. I pull off the pants, repair the seam from mid inner-thigh up and over to the just the other side of the crotch, and hustle back out.

The sweat and heat team up with the tape to torment me. For 7+ innings the rolled back edges of the duct tape randomly grabs and pull hairs out of the more tender regions of my anatomy, whilst I try to blink back the tears and pay attention to the game.

By the end of the game, I was so raw I walked bow-legged for a week. That damn tape was better at adhering to my skin than it was to the polyester.

The one thing I have found duct tape truly sucks at is sealing ducts. Tried to fix a leak in my AC and the crap just dried out and blew off.

OTOH, it did great keeping the lid of my car top carrier from blowing open. Sealed the front edge and was in business.

I absolutely loathe duct tape.

If it can't be done with expensive power tools...it's not worth fixing.

Me too. It's one of the few types of tape that contain natural rubber latex and so I'm rather allergic to it.

Hmmm...I'm allergic to latex as well, but I've never had issues with duct tape.

I will say I've fixed lotsa roadside stuff on the bike with electrical tape - I usually carry a small roll with me on the bike. Good for loose bar tape, cable routing, etc. Of course, that prolly has latex in it as well.
