Thanks Colnago. I'm definitely gonna explore those routes at some point. Unfortunately I'll only be in SLO (staying near the University) briefly for a family thing, and am hoping to squeeze in a ride with only a couple hours to work with, so those are more ambitious than I'd have time for this trip!

This might be a bit far for your time frame but Montana de Oro state park has some nice trails and is worth a visit for the coastal scenery.

For anyone interested, I called an LBS up there and they recommended Old Stagecoach Road (based on where I was staying). Turned out to be a really nice ride--nicely manicured gravel road, the first part flowy/rolling through some farm area, and then a good climb but the grade wasn't too intense:
Getting to it from my hotel involved a couple miles on the 101 freeway shoulder, but it's a nice wide shoulder, not much debris.
