On a similar Spam note..I remember canned corned beef..no idea if it's still around.

Absolutely. Hormel still makes it. I’m sure others do as well. But the thought of eating that “cold” scares me.

When I was a kid my mom used the canned corn beef to make creamed corned beef and peas on toast. As I (vaguely) remember, it wasn't bad. I haven't had it since.

You're right though..cold right out of the can..hmm..if it were the only food-type substance around, I'd probably eat it...in a queasy sort of way. It wouldn't be a first choice to take with me on a tour.

Those gelatinous meats in a can scare me without cooking, especially those like Spam when I can't even identify the animal(s) it's made from.

You put them in sandwiches or mix them with other things.

I do not recall seeing anything like that in cans in stores in USA, perhaps I am looking in the wrong place. But, in my post number 6 above, I had an envelope of something quite similar.



Plus of course, the small bottle of wine, although perhaps I should have had white instead of red?

I thank you all for sharing your ideas with me. I leave for a week long tour down south shortly and wanted to go cookless on this one. Speaking of the French, we'll be slipping into Louisiana and Cajun country and the campground owner made up a big pot of Etouffee for us the last time through. That's another way of going cookless, ha.

Yeah, but the stuff that Machka was refering to was mixed with mayo or otherwise designed to spread.

For cooking, I often buy small cans of ham or chicken. This day I had ham and eggs, but the small pan meant one after the other.



That said, I do recall one day on this same trip having a ham sandwich with a can of ham.

I had to think about this for a bit, its not a word that I use very often. Funny though because it kinda means suffocated or something along those lines, so I guess it fits as a big, honking, pot 'o something that fills you up.
Cute name though.
I remember a few times hearing Cajun music bands from Louisiana play at outdoor concerts at the Jazz Festival here in Montreal, and its very interesting to hear the odd mix of French/English/American accent and words thing going on, even for an Anglo like myself.

For me my go to is the Tasty Bites (or as I call them Indian MREs) I used to eat Punjab Eggplant like it was going out of style. Loved that stuff, then got sick of eating it and stopped for a long time and never quite picked it back up (though on occasion I will) There are some other brands out there that are good on was a Rajama Dal that was quite good.

I don't often take cans because cans are more weight that I really don't want to carry but I do like beans so sometimes I will throw a can of baked beans or something the pack and eat those fresh from the can no cooking required.

One packet of diced Spam and one third of a packet of Cheddar Potato is not a bad meal when you are camping many days away from stores or refrigeration.

Yes, although I generally prefer the chicken breast "flakes" with springwater because there are fewer calories. Although on a tour, I might go with something with calories!

We ate spam regularly as kids and will admit to having fond memories of it. It's hard to find a food that makes you want to burst into song when you eat it But not corned beef hash!

In my 20's when I was running (a lot) my main protein diet was canned tuna (in water), kippers and sardines. They (sardines) are the forgotten easily transported and nutritious fish. The cans even stack together neatly in a rectangular shape. You would have to eat them away from camp though if you were in bear country.

Someone mentioned the weight of canned foods. If you consume the liquid as well, like in baked beans or chili or ravioli, that weight (other than the can) is just water that counts towards hydration. If you have access to water at camp it's a negative but if you are packing water to cook with its a wash. Can of soup or dehydrated soup with a cup of water - they weight the same.

I don't know why more people don't take Tang on tour. It was the breakfast drink of Astronauts.
