Dad's Advice

My stepson sent this text to his mom:
" Got to use the ol' dollar bill trick that Doug taught me today. . . . except I only had a 5 so it was a 5 dollar bill trick!!!"

Second message:
"Inflation"

That is pretty amazing. He was anout 15 years old when we used the dollar bill to boot a tire. He turns 40 next month

Yep, great story. 👍

I always keep a $1 bill in my wallet, away from the rest, in case I ever need a really good poker hand on one, lol. 😁 Now it can possibly be even more useful. 🤔😁😉

One of the ACA trips I did, one person kept having flats, I think he used a dollar bill on four occasions. But I kept telling him that you pay for what you get, should be using a ten, but he kept using ones and kept having flats.

I have some tyvek from USPS envelopes cut up into rectangles and there is one or two packed with each of my spare tubes. Never needed one yet, but some day I might. I often do not carry any currency with me when I go out for a ride.

Great story.

ever since our dollar bill was replaced by a large coin, the "Loonie", in 1987, all of my tire cut booting experiences work but I ride with a distinctive "clunk , clunk, clunk"
same in '98 when our two dollar bill was replaced with the larger "Toonie" so it was then "CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK"

and dangit, I never remember to find and cut out some tyvek envelope pieces , every time you mention this I say I should do it....

15 year old boy pays attention and learns something useful, applies it 25 years later. That’s as awesome as it is rare. You must be a heck of a teacher.

I had several sidewall failures when I was in high school. I think the bike shop had a bad batch of tires. After two or three new tires blowing out in a week or two, the bike shop telling me that that was their best tire in that size so it obviously was my fault, I bought their cheapest tire and stopped having blowouts.

I had a glass cut across the tread on my rando bike. I was not sure if enough of the cord was cut that the cut would grow in size, so I booted it with tyvek. A year or two later replaced the tire so I do not know if the tyvek was needed or not, but I certainly do not regret using it.
