There are companies still using Taiwan for frames and lots of Shimano components are still manufactured in Japan AFAIK. Otherwise locate a nice bike from the late 80's to early 90's(plenty on Craigslist in my area). Frame and components probably made in Japan. Lastly go to Rivendell; nothing from China on their site.

Dura-Ace and XTR are made in Japan, but most XT stuff is made in Malaysia. Every XT crankset I've ever had has had "Made in Malaysia" written on it. They also have a factory in Singapore IIRC.

Hmmmm...maybe the craze is coming to an end. Posted one of my bikes on CL this weekend and have gotten one serious inquiry so far. Will meet up tomorrow. Listed price in line with bicycle blue book.

If its a carbon bike then some people might be concerned about and crash damage.

A $600 bike will sell faster than a $2200 bike

Nah, selling a city bike that should appeal to those looking for an affordable entry into biking. So if it's high, I'm thinking in terms of $20, not hundreds.

Edit: Bike sold, took a $20 haircut--worth it for the brief, drama-free transaction.

Next up, the "well ridden" Trek 1000...

Listed the Trek late Saturday night, sold Sunday morning. Had over a dozen serious (seemingly) inquiries. Had some conversations which seem to indicate it's a frenzy when it comes to affordable bikes. I, again, used the blue book guide for pricing. Think I may have under-priced my bike.

The shortage is everywhere, and affecting every retailer - at least, where I live. Yesterday I stopped by my favorite LBS and they have a dozen bikes in stock that are priced at $1,500 and above, but zip, that is, not a single bike that shows on the floor for less that that amount.

Then today I went into the local Academy Sports and out of curiosity looked at the bicycle selections, or at least, the few they had. Photo of the barren bike cupboard appears below.
