Christmas Present
Hi - I'm looking for a bike for my sons Christmas present. I don't want to spend more that £200 if I can help it. Rigid or front suspension, would prefer disc breaks, but it's not a deal breaker.
Don't want to get him something rubbish, but I realise with the price i'm a bit limited.
What does anyone suggest please?

Hi - I would like new mountain bike, he's said a Dawes XC18 would be OK - he's 13. Do you think that age needs any front suspension, or do you think rigid will be fine as he's really not got any weight on him?

Good-quality suspension is expensive, and one needs to maintain it consistently. Kids will tend to want suspension because that is what they see in the Youtube videos, but often are better off avoiding suspension at the price points they or their parents are able to afford. The burden of ongoing maintenance is often overlooked when making the original purchase. Your son is smart to mention the rigid bike as an option.
Rigid will be fine if your son wants it to be fine. The mindset matters a lot. One adjusts to the equipment that one has. And I know that I will take my rigid mountain bike (I have two of them, actually) any day over a wobbly fork.

No suspension is better than bad suspension. And if you had a $1,500+ MTB with good suspension, you will need to maintain it or pay someone to do it. Replace oil, dial in the air pressure etc.
Every once a while I see some old-school riders on the trail with single speed rigid steel MTB. And they still beat some newbie butt with their fancy fully suspended bikes.
