I doubt anyone has reliable numbers for trails in the US. How would one go about measuring usage if there is no controlled access? In my limited experience, the C&O towpath is the most popular for touring or maybe the GAP, but there are trails such as the Mount Vernon Trail and others in the DC area that are more heavily used by commuters and pedestrians.

I did Katy in late Oct and early Nov of 2010. Froze one or two nights. But everyone I talked to said we did it the right time of year to avoid the heat.

Early May should be good for weather. Odds of a flood are probably small, but you might want to keep an eye on the news before your trip.

Sedalia to Clinton, all I remember was massive headwind.

Some of the really old telephone poles were covered with growth.

We stayed one night at the Katy Trail Shelter, is that still in use?

Cool photo. I rode some of the Olympian Trail in Montana in 2017. It's the same abandoned Milwaukee Road rail line that becomes the Route Of the Hiawatha and goes into Idaho. A Good portion of that line was electrified at some point. Despite going bankrupt in the 70s and its main line to the west coast being abandoned, many of the relatively crude, wooden catenary structures that held the single power wire are still erect.

I didn't take this photo, but I rode across the same bridge:

I agree, I would think gap/c &o more popular since a larger population base near by.

Trail cameras. Land managers use them to calculate trail use and document wildlife interactions.

If you're talking about this one in Tebbetts. it was open a couple years ago when we last rode thru there. There was also a new small bar and grill right next door which was ideal but it may now be closed.
Edit: Yea, the Bar and grill probably closed permanently

Yup, that is the one. Not too fancy, but the price makes it a bargain. In 2010 there was a small tavern next door. This is how it looked in 2010.

Yea, great place to stay and Jim had a nice little tavern nearby at that time but he retired and a couple re-built the place next door but it must not have remained open very long. That's one of the problems with the Katy is that small businesses on the trail come and go. I always tell people to call ahead to make sure the place of business is open because many shut down early to mid October when cycling conditions are darn near perfect.

The Mickelson Trail (with exceptions for the short stretches in towns) and the Route of the Hiawatha charge to use the trail on a honor system. I would bet that helps then assess numbers. To ride the former, you fill out a license and drop it with your payment in an "Iron Ranger."
