Replacement axle & skewer - Vintage 105 hub
I discovered my rear axle & QR skewer is broken on my bike. It is a mid-late 1980's Shimano 105 hub with freewheel. Looking at the velobase, I believe the model is Shimano HB-1050 which I believe has a 10x1x137mm axle. Are there any decent sources for reasonable priced axles and skewers? The ones I have found so far aren't too far off a new hub (which would open a whole can of worms).

Any bike shop should have these in stock. If you're pinching pennies, find a bike co-op that sells used parts- Shimano has always used 10x1mm thread on their rear axles. You can always buy as axle that's too long and shorten it with a hacksaw.

A new hub as a source for an axle is not wrong. No one is making you use the hub shell and rebuild the wheel. You'd end up with spare cones, which might need replacing anyway... Andy

Your own search should have turned up Wheels Manufacturing. About $21. But made of 4130 Cromoly, and made in the USA, so a bit more unlikely that I'll need another one. Here.
I just installed it, and it's quite nice. Others also indicated that they liked this company's products.
Or, use ebay for a cheaper source. I found them for around 7 bucks, plus a few bucks for shipping.
Or, go to any decent bike shop.

Just look for an old 126mm spaced hub. (scrap bin)

Open sunday afternoon 2-5pm at 1415 Knowlton St in the Northside neighborhood. They certainly have axles and skewers and can help you do the replacement if you want. They operate on a membership model, where you need to be a member in order to use the tools and get parts. A one-year membership costs $20 or two hours of volunteer work. Certainly worth it just for the access to all those bike specific tools which are expensive to buy yourself, especially if you don't use them very often. And there's a whole basement full of parts.

Funny that a few months ago I was dumping M10 axles with cones, variety of spacers (1mm to 16mm) and locknuts (4.2mm to 10mm) and free bearings - 12 sets and shipping for an even $20....and not a single set sold.
Meanwhile people were paying 9.00 w/ shipping for a SINGLE axleset.

He only paid for shipping. I have take-out hubs around the shop that once a month go to the metal recyclers. There are currently ten wheels in the shop that need to be broken down into component parts and re-cycled. That is the normal number of wheels tossed out of our co-op weekly. I was just passing along a deal to another cyclist. He will have to do the work to rebuild the hub, but the parts were cheap enough for him to do the work and save some change for his college aged daughter, He is gonna need it! Smiles, MH
