I got close? I need to swap the front brakes out, install the handlebar that should arrive tomorrow, and run the brake cables. It already shifts perfectly, and the XT thumbies aren't even attached to the bars yet, hehe. What bars am I putting on? An SR sling shot, and chrome handlebars. Nothing else would look right.,,,,BD

A recently acquired Venture by Raleigh Canada. Has the "Mountain Tour" decal. SN would lead me to 1989. I liked the stem so much, I bought the bike for $40.

You are making me think about returning my 1986 Black Chrome Sierra back to its original state. The SR slingshot stem was part of the package. I have all the parts except for the seat and grips, which were terrible anyways. I was trying to make a drop bar conversion, but I didn't like the ride very much.

Which grips did your Sierra have? Mine has the same as this bike. I don't love the grips, but I don't hate them either. They're an early ergo type, a thin semi aero looking pistol grip.,,,,BD

Love the Peugeot! Those are Tange supple grips which were all the rage back in the 80s ( had some on my chrome mongoose MTB)

Only complete MTB I have is a GT ricochet . rides nice with slicks

It has been years since I changed them, so I don't remember, Schwinn OEM I guess. "Bicycling" had a review that called them a "material harder than concrete". They were round, not shaped like the Peugeot.

I not have photo but i have one trek 830 antelope. I take out the 48/38/28 crank and i put road bike crank 52/42. is had freewheel 7 speeds 14-28 but i try found 9 speeds wheel and i want make i think 13-28 if i can do that.

And the bars showed up finally. HUGE earthshaking difference from the single pod atb stem. This made the bike IMHO! Now all that's left is to get rid of that black seatpost, which I am fairly sure isn't original.,,,,BD

It does look good, like it means business.

I just finished putting the slingshot stem back on the Sierra. I also put on a pair of fenders that were laying around, so I can ride in bad weather. My bars are pretty pitted, though. I wish someone made an alloy version.

Not mine anymore, unfortunately. I had too many bikes in the garage, and it ended up getting parted out, but it was a sweet frame and I will miss it- 87 Fuji Mt Fuji LTD, the top of the line mountain bike from Fuji with double butted chromoly, XC Power components

I bought this frame a while back, with everything but the wheels. The parts were too rusty to use if I ever wanted it to look good. I may try to redo the paint, and get some original style decals. More likely is a deep polish, paint touch up, and new decals. I am still undecided on the derailleurs. For now I bolted on the FD/RD from the Peugeot redo. There is even a thread about this model. Sold as a bare frame through the Schwinn catalog. One thing I am happy about, is that it has massive amounts of tire clearance There's still a good 3/8's inch, probably more front and rear with these fatter than average 2.1's.,,,,BD



I am going to try the Conti X King 2.2's I have, tomorrow.

Not a huge difference from the last pic, but at least I can get my legs fully extended now. I also found the drive side crank arm to be bent inward ever so slightly. I bent it back, and will keep an eye on it. I am imagining it's a pretty soft alloy. I am not a masher on vintage mountain bikes anyway. I tend to stay in the saddle, pedal in circles, and let the gears do the work. Surprisingly, this bike isn't as heavy as I suspected it to be. Not light, but not a tank either. 29 pounds maybe? I haven't weighed it.,,,,BD

It's a bummer that the Regal's super fat rails wouldn't fit the new seatpost. The Avocet looks more period correct anyhow, which is fine by me.

I bought this pair of Ross Mt. Hood bikes at a local second hand shop over the summer. I really was only going to buy the grey one for myself, but after watching the green one sit outside all summer, I bought it too. By then the price had dropped to $10, so I figured it was worth it for the parts. They were all original, but the tires and shift cable housings were disintegrating from age. The bikes apparently got used, since there is a lot of paint missing form the chain stays, but the rest is in pretty good shape for bikes that are almost 30 years old. Lubrication, cables and tires were the main things I needed. The brakes have the thick motorcycle cables. I changed to grip shifters on the grey bike just because I had them in the parts stash. I put a 170 mm crank on the green bike to accommodate my wife's shorter legs. I also swapped for the wheels on my Schwinn Sierra.
