Modern or otherwise available 1" threaded headset for Centurion Pro Tour 15
Picked up an '83 Centurion Pro Tour 15 recently and want to source a new-ish headset, as this one was stripped of all parts before making its way to me. The fork requires a 27.0 crown race, so Chris King Gripnut is unfortunately out of the question. Or is it?
I don't like the look of Velo Orange's 27.0 offering for this particular build; also don't really want to go with a Tange headset. Am I missing any new or new/old stock 1" threaded JIS options? I've seen $$$$ Dura Ace 74xx series JIS headsets on eBay...

What's wrong with a Tange headset? Classic looks, cheap, will last until the next millenium....

Nothing wrong with Tange just not feeling it for this build. All black CK would be ideal, so might end up getting it milled... seems like the easiest way to modernize.

Saw a black Phil Wood threadless headset on Retro-gression after visiting the link above. A threaded version would sure look nice.
Just popped on an old Falcon I had lying around for the time being

Looks like it's closely modeled on the alloy Shimano 600 headset of old. You could do worse!

I have a black FSA Duron headset like this one I removed from the Bertoni I bought last year. Looked a little too modern with the Nuovo Record.
It's kinda cool that the lower headtube cup revolves -- it doesn't use a normal (external) retainer of bearings. It rests on the crown race like one big bearing.

Just my opinion, but a chrome/silver one looks better there than a black one would.

I like the Ritchey Logic HS, they aren’t too pricey and seem like pretty good quality. Not sure about that crown race though.

My '77 Pro Tour actually came with a Falcon originally.
A number of years back I bought an Origin8 that came with 26.4 and 27.0 split races. Used cartridge bearings. Not the most attractive part in the world, but super versatile and good to keep in the used parts bin.

I haven't had great luck with the Tange Levin. The VO Grand Cru headset, on the other hand... real nice.

Was thinking the right black headset could look stellar with my black rolf wheels, but since I can't find either a Phil Wood threaded or Stronglight x12 in black, I suppose that silver Tange Levin NJS Alloy with 27.0 crown race might just do :-)

I was waiting to see this frame show up here. My resistance was weakening and I was glad when someone else grabbed it.

Yea, found it on eBay completely stripped down. Advertised as an '84 but in actuality its an '83 (per the font and lack of Dynamo routing, though I'm getting it drilled). Lots of odds and ends to find in order to assemble the hodge podge touring rig I'm starting to get a clearer picture of
