I was supposed to meet up with some friends yesterday to ride up the Mt Baker highway to Artist Point but I aborted that mission when I reached Bellingham due to low clouds and rain.
Looking west, the weather was beginning to clear so I moved on to my secondary target: San Juan Island.
As you can see, it was pretty nice out there. It's good to be flexible..

Strenuous exercise in this air is a very bad idea. Fortunately for us the firefighters seem to have a pretty good handle on the situation, so we have not been issued an evacuation warning. As I write this the helicopters with their buckets of water and the air tankers create a steady drone overhead. A very surreal world.

I cringed a bit when a news article posted a picture that was from the same vantage you took on one of your rides. Stay safe brother.

Spent a few days touring the Netherlands 3 weeks ago with a friend of mine. It was kind of a weird route but fun nonetheless as we started out on our way to Texel, one of the Wadden Sea islands, but missed the connecting train at Amsterdam so we had to change our plans a little bit. So we rode South for a few days on the East side of the country from Zwolle to Nijmegen and trying to get to Maastricht until the wind changed to the South and the heat increased. So we hopped on a train to the North and went from Leeuwarden to Lauwersoog to take the ferry to Schiermonnikoog, another one of the islands and cycled to Groningen the day after.

Pics!

Lunch in the East somewhere

Evening views along a river

Water supply during the day 1L + 0.6L of insulated water is really nice to have

Not many opportunities for nice pics when I'm rolling out at 4:45am for a quick ride before work to get the blood and body moving. No moon, one coyote, and a new closed road/construction zone that wasn't there yesterday. Still a nice little 12 mile ride in the dark.

I rode 29 miles after work today. This ride was a nice confidence builder because it is one of normal routes for my geared bikes but I was able to clear all the hills on my single speed. 1700' elevation gain. Stupid kamikaze bee stung my leg a mile from home. Weather was gorgeous, 75 low humidity and sunny.

Short little spin tonight before sunset.

This brass dust cover is one of my favorite parts on this bike. Can't wait for it to get some patina:

Tough 70 miles today. 3500 feet of rollers on a 52/39 x 11/28.

I don't think any of the inclines were more than 1/2 mile long.

Lake Bluff (again). Wanted to head into western Lake County, but didn't time. Very pleasant temps, dropped from 95 yesterday, to 80. Cool Canadian (thanks!) air makes it feel like autumn. 55 miles and no Jerry Ortega.

The lake was a beautiful shade of dark blue.

The northern wind was kicking up some pretty good waves - surf's up! Too choppy for small craft.

Took a small detour to the Walden - Bluff's Edge Bridge. The road leading to the bridge is closed to cars.

The span crosses a ravine filled with tall cedars. The smell is fantastic!

The deck of the bridge has several benches and is a nice place to take a break.

Girders under the bridge (hard to get a good angle).

No riding today but a huge headache.

Today I took my Tommasini to a bike shop so I can get the headset adjusted. It would lock in place when in straight forward position.

Mechanic tells me it'll be ready in 1 hour. OK cool ill walk the city with my wife, have lunch, spend some time outside for some fresh air. 3 hours pass and still no call from shop that it's finished.

We head back to see if its done and we're told it hasn't been started yet. After telling them I had no problem leaving it for a few days im bothered by the way it was handled. A phone call would've been nice but i head home.

1 hour later I get a call from shop saying I need to replace the SR headset. I ask if it was disassembled and mechanic says NO. How can you tell me I need a new headset without opening it and supposedly the races are extremely pitted.

I decided to pick up my bike before closing. What a strange coincidence the shop owner was able to fix it on the spot. Turns out the mechanic tried the old " you need a new (insert part name) because its broken...even though I didn't check it" scam.

Owner said he had a talk with the mechanic.

I finally finished my latest build, starting with a '97 De Bernardi frame and sticking to a very '90's aesthetic. I took it for a 32-mile ride along the river and canals this morning. It's very nimble, light, and obnoxious. I love it.

Definitely got the 90s vibe going here! Don't know about the obnoxious tag, though; how about "bright"?

It wasn't necessarily a scam, maybe just a lazy, overworked, or inexperienced mechanic. When a headset starts locking in the straight ahead position it is usually because the races, particularly on the bottom which takes all the load, have become pitted. Unlike other bearings, the headset bearings do not continually move around the races. Most of the time they move back forth over one place, which is more or less straight ahead. One "fix" is to rotate one of the races slightly w.r.t. the other so that the dimples on one don't line up with the dimples on the other. This fixes the problem but is really just a temporary fix. The true fix is indeed a new headset. The "talk" which the shop owner promised may have been more to show him the trick with the bearings and to impress on him the importance of being considerate to the customers, especially when the customer and bike don't call out for the ultimate fix at that time.

My sweetie and I took our tandem out for the first time in many months, about two miles around the neighborhood. Just as the covid thing hit we had taken a spill in which Sharon was injured slightly, and what with her recovery and the uncertainty of how to stay healthy neither of us has ridden at all since then. My bike commuting stopped because I'm working from home. So today's excursion on a very windy day is a step forward. Yay!

Id chalk it up to all 4 (lazy, lazy, lazy and lazy). Nothing seemed honest what yhe mechanic was doing and telling me.
At the end it was the top nut was too tight. It hasnt locked in place since then. Since completing the build I've only ridden the bike a handful of times and the races were almost new.

If after a few rides it locks again ill know to replace.

40 miles today 2500' elevation gain on Bates. Sunny, low humidity and windy!

On a steep climb I saw this hawk feather on the road. I had to stop for it.

I put it in my jersey pocket to give to my kids, but of course it was gone when I checked for it on the way home.
