Took a nice local roundabout test ride about 5 miles on a Quarry Trail Roadmaster recently fixed up to the local thrift store for donation. Still not a good bike but fixed up it's clean safe to ride and everything works good.

40 miles on road and trail; no flats today - hooray! This is what I've been putting my miles on:



Pretty soon I will be heading back up to the PNW and getting back to the "manual transmission" bikes. Admittedly this "automatic" is still a damn fun bike, and with the 53/39 up front and a 26t bailout I have better gearing than at home. In the end, they all get the job done (putting a smile on my face, that is).

Today I tried out what could be my commute to work on days I don’t need to take children to school. I strung together cutting through two neighborhoods, crossing two major thoroughfares, an unpaved rail-trail and a mill village to come up with a reasonable 20 minute or so commute of 4.5 miles or so. That was clearly not enough miles, so I swept around the old side of Greenwood. I stopped to grab a pic of Sunnyside, built in 1851 before rolling on.




From there I rolled out past Robber Baron Row, aka the nicer end of E. Creswell, with its collection of large stately 1920s homes built for the local mill owning families. New Market took me to Florida Ave., where an imp seized my handlebars and turned me down Lebanon Church Road, known to older cyclists as the Canadian Mist Highway in honor of the hundreds of plastic pint bottles discarded along the roadway 20 years ago - as in, one every two yards or so.

Norris Road, the queen of close-in dirt roads, called to me. I hadn’t ridden here in at least five years, but it was once a favorite route. I found it picturesque enough to actually stop and take some pictures, including one of the mighty Julius the Mercian Vincitore fixed-gear.








From there I took Scotch Cross Road, where I failed us all by not getting a photo of Scotch Cross, the grand old house that someone has actually saved and renovated. I survived the 225 bypass and swept ‘round to the other end of Florida Avenue, made my way to the nice paved rail-trail, cut through the trendy part of Uptown Greenwood with its local brew pub and artisanal pizza joint and art gallery, then back to the unpaved trail and made my way home. Strava says 22.8 miles, the Sigma 800 on my handlebars says 23.1. Either way, it was a genuinely enjoyable ride!

Smokey here - strong winds from the west. Did 68 miles up into Lake County. Cooler than predicted temps helped extend range.

Just came back from a morning ride through the western suburbs with a local friend. First real ride on a new build:



About 20 miles in on a slight climb, I heard a metal on metal sound from my rear wheel. Stopped and realized I had broken a spoke but took me a while to figure out where it went:





That’s the first time I’ve had that happen! I opened up the rear caliper to allow for a bit more rim movement, and we completed the second half of the ride.

Nothing fancy today just pretty much my usual loop but I did it backwards, I was beginning to worry about always mating right turns and my tires wearing unevenly.

The Cornelo seemed like a great bike for an early fall ride. I found some vintage Halloween decorations to go with my vintage bikes

Been using a Camelbak the past couple of rides and appreciate the extra volume of not only water but also storage space. I'll most likely begin pressing this into service on my longer rides once I return to the PNW, too.

Another 32 on my usual out/back. Honestly after two flats I'm loathe to head out too far, but since I'm just trying to keep up with my miles it doesn't much matter to me

Covered bridges? 19% grades? That's not the Evanston in which I live. In fact, until I saw the Baha'i Temple image I felt certain you must have meant some other state's Evanston. Care to share your route?

The covered bridge was in Long Grove and the 19% stuff was out near Bull Valley.

Sounds painful! I used every single one of my gears on that ride, and I could have gone with lower than 30x28 around that area.
