Pinarello Treviso
I just picked this up the other day for $40, it was sitting out by the side of the road. I drove by and all I could tell was it looked old school. I turned around and saw the name and knew right away. The old man that owned it said he bought it in the early 80s. He was stationed in Germany for the military and drove to Italy to buy it. Said he rode it all over Europe. I ended up buying it for $40, it has some paint imperfections but its in decent shape.
the
Id like to know what year it is and about what it is worth.

Let’s start with some pictures (once you have 10 posts) and a serial number.
Treviso was the town they were made, which may or may not be the model.

On the underside of the bottom bracket shell.
As there is no GPT logo on the seat stay caps, I'd guess that yours is the 'Italia' model from the 1981 catlog: https://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/Pinarello82/6.jpg
I don't think the decals are original; for one, Pinarello decals are notorious for disintegrating when exposed to oxygen, and the dual Pinarello seat tube decal would have only been used if there was a seat tube bottle cage mount, which yours doesn't have. Not to mention the 'Treviso' and 'Italia' decals on the fork should be on the seat tube between the Pinarello decals.

it's not a Pinarello if not with paint imperfections. too much wine when they paint. and $40? you are a bad person and we should not like you any more. congrats on your score. #jelly
btw. it might not be Treviso model. 1. most of Treviso / Italia models from 80's come with chromed stay caps? 2. Pinnie headbadges do have Treviso letters no matter what. of course, i maybe wrong. identifying a Pinarello is always fun.

I concur with P!N20. It appears to an early 1980s entry level model, either an Italia or Catena Lusso. Check the seat post diameter and examine the inside of the bottom of the fork's steerer tube for the presence of five helical ridges as shown in the attached photo.

Nice bike, especially for $40, in real money, even. In mine it would be like $299.95.... kidding!
Why does the front tire appear to be so close to the down tube, though?

You did amazing for $40, but it does look like a repaint with crash damage to me. As always, possible just the pictures...

Screaming deal for the parts alone, but I'm seeing a distinct upward arc on the top tube coupled with extreme front wheel proximity to the down tube on the first photo, and what appears to be a ripple in the down tube on the second image. There's also paint scraped off the down tube in that second photo that I believe might be a witness mark from a hard collision. I know that photos can often suggest bent forks and mis-alignment, but I work with images every day, and very much doubt that simple edge parallax is responsible for the deformation that I am seeing. I think it's been pretty profoundly damaged.
But, still - I wish I had better luck finding Pinarellos for $40! Good luck with it - I hope I'm wrong about the damage!

It's Crashed , the photo angle might be misleading but that down tube looks creased near the headtube lug and the gap on the front wheel To downtube looks tight.
Either way that Super Record derailleur and Super Record Crank is worth Way more than the $40 you paid. You still made out like a Bandit !

You should strip it down and leave the frame where you found it with a note, "I got what I needed, thanks xxx."

Ya so now I'm not sure what to do with it. I had no plans on having a vintage bike before I found this one but now I have the bug. Any ideas on what frame to buy? I checked on eBay for Pinarellos and they are not cheap.

Ha Ha! no they surely are not.
But you can compare the vintage bike hobby to really expensive pursuits like golf, horses, and gambling.
Buy what you like and can afford. If there is a large unbridgeable gap, get interested in something else, that you can afford.

These rules are wierd, I can only make 5 posts a day and I can't post pictures until I make 10 posts. So I will upload more as soon as I meet all the requirements....
It's not good but the current pictures make the wheels gap look worse then it is.

It looks like a 56 cm, those are pretty common (if that is your size?), now all you gotta do is find a frame and transfer everything over. Piece of cake.

It’s been whapped.
you still did amazingly well at that price.
so well, you could get a new front end made for the bike, and painted AND still be ahead.
ok, powdercoated...not a fan of that type of finish, you did well.
pretty sure it has been resprayed once already.
