Back to the Shires of Vermont for Virtual French Fender Day/Weekend. Saturday with my wife and today solo chasing dirt roads. Autumn in full glory.

I took advantage of a free day last Thurs. by driving north to New Paltz, NY, founded by Huguenots in the 17th century. I had planned on making it a 100 mile day through Ulster and Orange Counties but unfortunately I forgot about the kids' vaccination appointment at 1530 hours so had to turn around and cut the miles off at a speedy 40. Mohonk Mountain climb and stunning Ulster County scenery and foliage plus 2,500ft. climbing.

Living as I do in the Chicago area, my daily rides don't generally have the scenic beauty many people post to this thread. I do enjoy how Mother Nature uses our constructions as canvas though. Yesterday I took a ride into the Loop at rush hour for the first time since I retired in August 2019. Here's what I saw. There's the transient (clouds embracing the Chicago skyline):
the more medium term (looking south from LaSalle and Washington at 9am - amazing what she can do with a simple virus - everybody's working from home - despite it being Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day, the markets were open, so this view would normally be packed with people and vehicles):
and her many long-term projects to rewild the spaces we mistakenly claim as our own:

Another day's ride on the Cross County Trail, this time to the southern end. Clearly the older segment, mix of gravel, asphalt and concrete. Not very well maintained, with tree root bumps and much washed out gravel on the unpaved portions.
Most of the creek crossings were step fords- just a series of cast concrete stepping stones placed one stride apart while carrying one's bike. Note the steppers in the lower section of this photo:
It was pretty, though, with some of this:
And had to be careful of wet leaves on the steep uphill (20%++!) and downhill segments. Recent rain and early leaf drop combined to make things a bit slimey in places. However, the Pelizzoli did well. Could have used some lower gearing on the steeper bits, but still.
This is close to the end of the trail, called the Barrel Bridge. Like most pre WW2 construction in this area, it's built almost entirely of locally produced brick.
It's also part of the East Coast Greenway:

Upgraded the crank set on my covid clunker Schwinn Messa GSX with a Truavitiv ISOFlow I got off a recent salvage bike. Very nice improvement in over all ride more than I expected so worth the hour so of clean up with with accetone and dish soap. So I took a nice short birthday getaway ride up to Thompson Park nice fall weather but a bit windy.

Did 61 miles up to Libertyville for a change of pace. Re-discovered a MUP that I hadn't been on in 20+ years. Last time I tried it, it was in very poor condition and only partially paved. Apparently, they improved it and extended it. Opens up some intriguing possibillities to connect to the Chain-o-Lakes.
Semi-epic day overall. Chilly start (upper 40s), unexpected rain/sleet, and then 22 miles of headwinds coming home (30+ mph gusts). Only got once pic before the phone battery died because of the cold temps. - long freight heading to Canada.

Getting down to the last warmish days of the year in Madison. 61° and looking at the 40s tomorrow. Either way, beautiful ride from Middleton to Tenney Park.

Up to the Snoqualmie Tunnel via Iron Horse Trail with Jacob today. Was hoping a couple other BF members could go, but alas that was not to be the case. One in particular I really felt sorry for after learning Friday night of his reason for missing out. Speedy recovery, Matt!
Started wet which wasn't all that bad, actually. I mean, I didn't melt or anything, you know? But man, did my bike get dirty! Here are some pics:
A stop at a DIY car wash on the way home got a majority of the gunk off the Casati - and don't worry, I kept the blast away from my bearings.
It was getting chilly by the time we reached the summit/tunnel. I've still not decided on what kind of light system to go with; the 2.7 miles of tunnel to Hyak would be ridden by Jacob but not myself. I hung out talking to hikers and fellow cyclists as the west portal while Jacob made the ride to the other side and back. The return is almost all downhill, so it was a fun bomb - until I flatted a rear tire. Surprisingly the Challenge Elite tire came off really, really easily which was a nice thing as the grime and mud all over everything was already making it one of my messier flat repairs. Our mini-pump didn't want to go much higher than an estimated 65psi, so for the final 8-10 miles we took it a bit easier and I got down with my replacement tube without further issue. Temps in the 50s, and the only falling rain was at the beginning. A fun day out on a route I'd not gotten around to riding yet this year.
Oh, and I didn't get pics, but we had to lift our bikes over two downed trees and ride underneath (!) another on the way up. One had been cleared by a crew by the time we descended.
Final note; while loading my photos to Flickr I heard a loud metallic "twang" on my left. The Casati was in the stand, and the sound seemed to come from the front wheel. Sure enough, the front wheel suffered a spoke failure I've never experienced: the nipple broke at the base, and the entire spoke/nipple remainder had popped out of the rim eyelet. Wheel now has a serious out-of-true spot. Gremlins, I tell ya!

Some slow time at Marina Bay in Richmond. One kid here while the other accompanied my wife, who is reacquainting herself with roller skates after many years away. Beautiful day, lots of flat, easy trail...

Looks like I'll be budgeting for another wheel rebuild. I had a rim fail at the eyelet earlier this summer. In this case, I may be lucky and only need to replace the nipples. Here's the failure:

Put the fenders back on the Rummage Sale Super Course in time for a little rain.
Just a few sprinkles, but it was still satisfying. Did a loop around the Willamette, Selwood Bridge to Steele Bridge. Nice, except for downtown, which is rough.

51 and change today on the Old Croton Aqueduct trail. This image captures the feeling for me:
The trails and dirt roads have been calling me.
Leaving the Bronx
Crib notes, Garmin with map, iPhone in pocket...total belt and suspenders.
When I got to Tarrytown I was prepared to cross the new Mario Cuomo Bridge which has a much-ballyhooed bike/pedestrian path. I grabbed a decent espresso and started out but it was so crowded on the path, and the roadbed is a highway. It was so jarring after 20 miles of trail that I turned around and went back to the trail.
It's still predominantly green in southern NY, but the light on this tree made me stop.
