Campy hub, is it dead or not?
I believe this rear hub is a late 80's Chorus/Victory unit. I am considering building a wheel with it even though it has this obvious flaw outboard of the hub flange on the rear non-drive side. It wont be a display bike, more of an occasional rider. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't build a wheel around it unless I had an used rim and used spokes already - and I wouldn't trust it much anyway.

There's zero reason to build it up. Use the axle, nuts, washers, cones, and caps for parts. Polish the shell and put it on the bookcase.

it might be fun to file it and see how deep the crack goes but it's not worth reusing

I'll just pile on to say that I'd never ride that wheel. Considering the forces you ask a wheel hub to withstand, that's asking for trouble. A few good parts inside that hub that can be salvaged, though, as others have pointed out.

I probably won't build it up. Hubs like this are not that expensive. I was just curious to see how bold others on this forum are.
FWIW, the wheel that this came out of had already done the Eroica Cal medium route in this condition and it did not seem to get any worse because of it. I do know that it will eventually fail though.

I'll be contrary. That hub is perfectly safe as long as you keep the crack down. So ride it accordingly and don't sweat it.
