My first ride ever whilst wearing cycling shorts
So, I finally "took the plunge" last week and shelled out about $60 for two pairs of {very** basic cycling shorts. They arrived on Friday, and I finally had an opportunity to ride after work today. I rode about 8.5 miles, and I have to say... it was a very nice experience to have that "cushy for my tushy!"

The padding is nice, but I like the fact that they don't chafe when I get sweaty.

OTOH if you had a recumbent bike you could have saved the $60. If you ride a recumbent you dont have to buy clothes to protect you from your bike.

Yes but you're ignoring the fact that if you ride a recumbent, you'll need to purchase a pipe and multiple pouches of exotic tobaccos, a tweed cap for when off the 'bent, moustache wax... the list goes on and on.

I may try bibs at some point in the future.... but the next step will probably be some cycling shoes with the clip-in cleats. One of the first changes I made to my Hybrid when I bought it about nine years ago was, I had my LBS swap out the cheapo plastic pedals for dual pedals (platform on one side and clip-in on the other side).... and yet in all these years.... I've never ridden with the cycling shoes/ cleats! Any recommendations for some reasonably priced cycling shoes? Or is there no such thing??

At least a bent rider can see what is all around him. Better than staring at your front wheel and DF riders do a good percentage of the time.
In the last few days there is a video going around that shows a DF rider with his head down, and crashing into the back of a car.
