NYC Bike Experience
Just got back from a week in New York. Spent three days in Manhattan and saw probably every make and model of bike in existence! So different from back home.
I saw more bikers commuting on the city streets than I've seen in my hometown in a year's time, amazing. And cool.
It did frustrate my kids that I spent as much time looking at bikes as I did skyscrapers, but oh well.
I also noticed what appeared to be memorials, bikes painted white along with a sign giving the person's name. One such bike had a badly bent rear wheel and I assume the rider died near that spot and his or her bike was left as a memorial. Interesting, and sad. I hope drivers take note and start looking out for bikes more.
Anyways, had a great time, loved the city and got a little taste of NYC bike culture. Very cool indeed.

I didn't ride. Didn't have the time built into the schedule. Next time maybe. Central Park looks like fun to ride around.
I felt totally safe in Manhattan, even walking from our hotel down to Times Square in the late evening/early morning.
I'll be back. Fun stuff.

Times Square after hours isn't a pretty site. At least not in the way New York will want tourist to see it.
Tell your kids the architecture in New York isn't as pretty as the variety of bicycles anyhow.
Hope you got to go to some museums!

Glad you enjoyed it! We're definitely having one of the busiest bike summers I've seen. Come back with a folder or rent a bike to tool around the city. Taking the bike path nearly the whole length of Manhattan from Battery Park to Dyckman St. here in Inwood is pretty fantastic.
