Discussion last year around the shim approach to defeating the Ottolock - no one who didn't have professional lock picking kit could seem to make the shim approach work.

If the point is discouraging an opportunistic 'honest' thief from riding off with a bike, why not just a simple padlock put around eg. the seatstay and a spoke? Or around the rear rim/tire eg just above the bottom bracket?

There's also a ring lock that attaches to the brake bridge and stays there -- apparently a fixture of the classic Dutch city bike.
My aim is for a slightly higher level of security: The 'honest' thief who throws a bunch of bikes into a truck and drives off.

For higher-crime areas, and when leaving the bike for longer periods, this heavier "rope"-style lock secures in a completely rattle-free manner and flexes gently enough to prevent road impacts from traumatizing one's frame.
It's a well-tested Specialized lock that is also made with armored cable, though perhaps no longer in production.

Beware that model of Specialized lock. It, and most cheap Chinese "armored cable" locks can be clipped in seconds with very small bolt cutters. The "armored" links are soft mediocre steel and it's mostly empty space with a small cable inside. Realistically, it only looks safer than a cable. There's a reason they cover those with 2-layer sheaths -- it's to hide how weak they are.
