I just went hand-built with November on their Cafe Racers/i9 hubs, but those guys are 'nooooo noooo carbon rim brake nooooo' (for decent reasons NOT all to do with the brake track). How about HED Belgian+ on a nice set of hubs (WI?). Super-wide, probably cheaper than those two, lots of builders working with them, fairly deep.

Haha! Fair enough, for sure. I did go with 46mm crabon rims myself, assuming I'm fat enough that the wheels won't be what gets beaten in the crosswinds, it's the America's Cup sail area my torso presents.

I'm excited to get my hand-builts, though, let me tell you.

I wanted to feel less modern with "steel is real" fanboys like @TrojanHorse but not digging the downtube shifters. Mahn this bike soaks the road buzz WAAAAAY better then a alum track racer

Pretty impressive ride for this 31yr old Columbus SL steel

they are still hard to find in the size you need.....I don't ride this one much and I'll never get another 56cm for $160 again so it just stays with me. Add I did was add bar tape and old 23c tires

I'm been tempted to modernize it like @TrojanHorse did but never pulled the trigger on the project. All I really need is cranks and some new cables oh and time. I can move the Sram Force shifters off my Felt. Til then I'll keep buzzing my fingers shifting the downtubes

What kind of nonsense is this? You wreck the wheels on 3 bikes so you’re down to your huffy?

im no steel is real fanboi. More of a “hey, what can I do with this. Ike I never ride” kind of thing. I love my crabon.

But just think, for that 6 grand (or so) you could take your drag coefficient from a brick-like 0.3077 to something like 0.3000. IMAGINE THAT.

Apparently, shaving your arms and legs reduces overall drag by about 5x as much as aero wheels. Still not gonna do it.

I have to admit. I've been admiring the Campy Bora One 35 DB wheels.

Picked up my rental bike in Boise this afternoon, had a nice 14 mile ride back to my son’s house in Meridian. Did a short stint on the Boise greenbelt trail before it was closed for construction. Will go riding with my son tomorrow.

Nice bike, a Specialized Roubaix Expert, I believe, Carbon, future shock, full ultegra hydraulic disks. Interesting bit of trivial, cost to rent a Ford Focus for 4 days, $106, cost to rent the bike for 24 hours - $65.

supply and demand!!

When i was home last month, I thought of renting a bike. Not only did almost nowhere do it, the far away places that did were expensive.

Should look at motorcycle rentals if you want your wallet to creak as it self-empties.

I now believe anyone buying really deep section wheels is just looking for an inarguable excuse to sit out on windy days. Because I've got barely-aero 31mm section wheels, and the winds coming out of the Cajon Pass this morning were trying to blow me clean off the road. With something like 60mm, impossible. Wind was straight out of the north (again) so any time heading east or west was just a nightmare. Luckily, the wind didn't exist below about 1,500ft-- as soon as I started my descent back into the valley, it just went away... of course. Finally headed south, no tailwind. Downtown Riverside, at ~1,000ft ASL, dead calm. My neck and shoulders are still sore from fighting the crosswinds on Tuesday.

Hills are fine. Rain is fine. Wind is dumb.

A simplified representation of why I can ride in a loop, and have headwinds from every direction... but if I try to ride the loop in the opposite direction, it's still headwinds. This dumb horseshoe valley just swirls wind from every direction all at once. This morning, I had a burst of strong headwind, a solid minute of tailwind, and then a slam of headwind all in a five minute span. On open ground. Not even near buildings. Absurd. I'm kinda where the blue dot is.

Somehow, every year I forget that the wind will return. And then it does.

I hear you on the wind. Here the wind typically will start out SSE to S, then veer to the SW to W as the day progresses. But when the wind is W, there are eddies in east Irvine and Lake Forest area, so it pretty much means I will be riding home upwind, no matter what.
