Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding at night never bothered me when I was commuting. Being lit up like a Christmas Tree helped ease me fears a lot.

The sad thing is, to me, the shear number of steam locomotives that were scrapped. Pennsylvania Railroad made a point of preserving one sample of each of their most prominent classes of locomotive, and you can see them now in Strasburg at the museum. But I think most railroads just junked all but one or two. Southern Pacific 'donated' a couple of their old 4-6-2 Pacifics to fairgrounds and such, and at least one was restored.

I understand the business reason behind it, of course - they were so thoroughly superceded by diesels that they lost al value to the company. Still, it's sad.
My dad was a B26 pilot at the end of WWII. They were all flown off and scrapped, some of them by him. It killed him to have to do that and to have to witness it. He spoke of it often. He was a Pennsy man both before and after the war, but could see the end coming and moved into the office at a trucking company in the late 50s.

The other day I was looking out the bedroom window, when something swooped across the yard and disappeared into the ivy by the fence. A scuffle ensued, hidden from my sight by the ivy. Then a Red Tailed Hawk exploded out of the ivy, mouse in his talons, and flew back across the yard.

I swear he was looking at me, like maybe expecting thanks or something.

I can't say as I can tell the difference. Closer to the equator and all. And no schedule to be served.

Our guys are pretty good. There was this one guy... but even he was good around the customers.

We even have custom masks.

On two occasions, peering out the bay window, through the Rhododendron at song birds feeding at the feeder hanging from a corkscrew elm, I have seen flashes followed by explosions of feathers as a red-tailed or sharp-shinned hawk has nabbed a cardinal or house finch. A few times when a hawk has missed, she/he will perch for a few moments on the deck rail and occasionally look me in the eye through the window.
