I sold a s-12s with a scruffy (chipped paint, surface rust) frame for $200 earlier this semester. Certainly took some patience, also took the right buyer who could appreciate the mechanical work I'd done and liked that it was a bit of a 'sleeper' that didn't look that great (unlikely to be stolen), but was a joy to ride.

Here's a link to the album of pics I used in the Craigslist ad- https://imgur.com/a/IDitX

That is one ugly frame! But those who want a nice riding bike that would be unattractive to thieves appreciate the battle scars.

Yeah, it was rough. Rough is probably an understatement. I'd sprayed some t-9 on the rusty areas after I'd cleaned it up with some steel wool. Thankfully it was lightly misting the day the buyer looked at it, so the water was beading up nicely.

Probably didn't hurt the sale that he'd just landed in the states the day before from Germany. It certainly helped to have impatience and exchange rates working in my favor.

Funny, I sold a scruffy Trek 800 MTB to an Austrian exchange engineer. The LBS torched the frame to pull the stuck seatpost for me, then rattle canned black paint on an already scruffy red frame. He paid $125 for it, I think I was lucky to break even on that one!

wow, mine is in alot better shape than that, i could fix it up but don't really want to put any money into it or the time. The shop i go to sells bikes on cosignment. I wonder if that would be a good option.

I've had really spotty luck with consignments- unless I bought the bike for an AMAZING price, any profit winds up in the pocket of the shop, not me.

Perfect example, bought a stowe with tricolor for $400 earlier this summer. It's probably not worth much more than $600. Now the gear exchange here in town takes 30% across the board, doesn't matter if it's a skewer or a complete bike, 30%. Let's say it sells for $600, 30% of that ($180) goes to the consignment shop, which leaves me with... $20 profit. woo.

The long and the short of it is, unless you just have it laying around and aren't doing any work on the bike, your time is much better served selling it for less on craigslist, but getting more once the dust settles.

I worked with a bike shop on a consignment for a while. They got amnesia, claimed they never had my bike, blah, blah, blah. Took me two years to get paid.

Hopefully others have had much better experience.

Want an easy sale? Just sell it well below market, as is.

And I can't imagine a shop taking a vintage bike on consignment, that needs work. OK, I did find one shop that did exactly that. I bought two bikes from them, paid $50 each for the bikes. I would assume the shop took about half of that, leaving the original owner $25 each... They certainly would have done better just putting them up as is on C/L.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

You should post some photos of the bike. S-10-S's changed a lot, getting steadily better over time.

If you post it for sale you'll need pictures for the ad anyway. So take some for us and we can give you a better idea what it's worth.

Looks like it's in great condition. Bar end shifters are a plus, chrome stays and fork is another plus.

I would say that bike could bring upwards of $250 here.

A 1981 S-12-S sold for $330 last month in Manhattan. It was an 18-speed, with bar-end shifters, and sold as a touring bike.

If you're in Toledo, advertise it in Ann Arbor with free delivery on campus. You'll get $250.
