I got up early,for a saturday, this morning to try and beat the heat on my ride. I drove to the trail as it runs north and south so I would be in the shade on the entire ride if I finished before the sun got to high. I had a nice ride and rode 42 miles. I finished at about 9:15 and headed home. On the way I stopped at a yard sale and bought some tools. The guy having the sale was 39 (he told me later). He saw my bike in the back of my truck and I was all sweaty so he knew I had just ridden. He said, "you should have went earlier to beat the heat".
I told him I did go early, but since I rode 42 miles it took a little while. He looked at me and said, so, how does bike riding affect your knees at your age?
No one was at the yard sale except me, him and his mother. I said in a rather loud and incredulous voice, "just what the heck do you mean by at your age?"
I even asked his mother if she heard what he said.
He was immediately apologetic and even put his hand on my shoulder and said he had a knee replacement and just wondered if biking would hurt his knee and he didn't mean it to sound like it did.
I quickly let him know I was only giving him a hard time and was'nt offended by his question.
He turned out to be a very nice fellow. We talked about biking and exersizing for a bit and he gave me a good deal on the stuff I bought.

I'm 57, had a knee replacement 11 years ago, (I've had 5 other knee surgeries) and find cycling one of the few activities that doesn't really bother my knees.

I'm more interested, at 51, in shoulder replacement and finding a solution for herniated lumbar discs. The only time my knees hurt is when I kneel on concrete.

The same thing (kinda) happened to me today, riding up Glendora Mountain Road to Glendora Ridge Road to Mt. Baldy Village. I was about 16 miles into the climb (about 3,000 feet of climbing on my legs) when I caught up to another rider.

I later found out his name is Carlos. I was going about 6 mph up this steep section, Carlos was going maybe 5 mph. I remarked that the climbing seemed to get tougher as I got older. He said he is 54 and asked how old I was. I told him 60, and he seemed surprised. "Wow, you don't look 60!" he replied. So I took that as a compliment . . .

But as I dropped Carlos and proceeded up the mountain road, it dawned on me that he may have been thinking "Wow, that guy looks a lot older than 60!"

So maybe it was not quite a compliment after all, but whatever.

I got carded the other day when I asked why I didn't get the seniors discount that kicked in at 55, the clerk didn't believe me and asked to see I.D. ,I'm older than the two of you.

I bought a regular size axe, a smaller camping axe, an 18" Rigid pipewrench, and two sets of knee pads for my sons to wear when installing my new kitchen floor. All together it came to $8.00

My knees are doing great for my "age", and better than my father's. At the same age, my father already had several knee surgeries that eventually ended in a total knee replacement.

I've installed a few floors, knee pads are a must, but what did they need axes for? Did you make them harvest, then hew the wood first? Or did you use them for 'encouragement'?
