since i been locking up m bike at school, ive been using ball bearings superglued inside the recess of the allen cap screws. nothing a lighter and small screw driver cant remedy, but slows down potential thieves.

however, mwf my chem prof just lets me bring my bike in the classroom. =] hate ridin with a lock in my bag.

The frame isn't going anywhere unless the wheel/tire is cut. Of course, cutting the wheel and tire is a very real possibility in NYC.

That slammed bar can't be comfortable. Hopefully the seat is "made for snake."

I am well familiar with the Sheldon Brown lock method, but at least in a busy urban area, I think it misses the point. The point is to telegraph a message to would-be thieves not to even bother because the bike is properly locked, but this method is just inviting thieves who think they know better to monkey with your ****. If not stolen property, then this is still asking for paint chips, dings, dents, etc.

It seems like a reciprocating saw would take care of that back wheel in less than 5 minutes.

I understand Sheldon's logic, but I still like to get it though the frame and the wheel if I can.

if someone actually wants to steal your bike, theyre gonna take it. bottom line. locks simply provide a means of slowing them down or forcing them to move onto another target

Good point. I guess I'm lucky enough to not been in a situation where I have to worry about my bike being stolen all that often. Usually, it's only out of my sight for a couple of hours max, and then it's usually at a place with a bouncer out front and piles of other bikes, so I don't worry all that much. Not to mention, it's a $300 bikes direct bike, if it get's stolen, no biggy.

yeah i mean im in manhattan all the time with my bike locked up and you just gotta use your melon

id rather lock my bike to the signpost on broadway where it could get nailed by someone getting out of a cab instead of "protecting it" in an alleyway where some tweaker could work on cutting it off a pole while im shopping

and theyre just things anyway, theyre replaceable. youll always have the memz you two shared <3

I must be missing something here. Unbolt the rear wheel, slide the frame up and over a bit and it is gone. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or what? How is the frame not going anywhere? At first glance, even to just a regular guy like me, the bike doesn't appear to be locked to the fence. That is an open invitation to at least attempt a theft for a thief. I would rather have the frame and wheel locked to the fence just to show hey, I pretty much know what I am doing here so don't mess with it.

unless you are an alchemist and can pass the lock through the metal of the rear triangle. the lock isnt just on the wheel, its locking the wheel to the pole.

imagine a pole going straight through the wheel and the rear triangle, can you just pull it off?
