Yea Thanks Narhay, my wife calls it Bike porn!?
Carlton might not be the best choice on the acc of the BB feels VERY indexed, cables are shot . . . it goes on
I will take some pics today of other possibilities while at my storage.

So I have been nutting out a few possible candidates,
1) Carlton Corsa $10 NZ (needs wheelset, cables,chain rear der . . . )
2) Marin frame $12 NZ (needs wheelset, shifters brakes cables chain is there and both Der's)
3)Marin Palisades trail $60 NZ (needed a service-Done, could do with a 36 spoke rear wheel, needs a bar change to be comfortable, it came with 2 sets of tyres, am I allowed to use either set, or the set it came with on bike?)
4) Reiker, NZ Made $60 (The $60 was for four bikes 2 of which I sold at $20 each. Bike has been sitting outside for a while?)
Now for the pics
1) Carlton Corsa 5
Payed $10 for both bikes pictured and sold the other bike in the 1st pic for $20 to a lady wanting a garden sculpture type thing.
Wheels in 3rd pic came from a Centurion Lemans
It was too big for me and a mate bought the frame fork bars and BB for $60 which was $10 more than I paid for the whole bike, can the wheels be used on the Carlton?
2)Marin Frame
Needs alot.
3)Marin Palisades Trail 53cm
Pic 1 is as it came, it came with some slick CST tyres too 26 x 1.5's, can I use the CST's without dipping into my budget?
Pic 2 is with a 36 hole wheelset and Marathon plus tyres(obviously will not be using the Marathon's!!)
4) Reiker NZ made by a company that built some very well thought of road bikes, they are now building postal bikes.
Pic 1 shows all 4 bikes purchased for $60, I sold the 2 MTB type things for $20 a piece, kept the 2 Red ones, so I am going to use the one that is without it's rear wheel. It did have a rear wheel the trader had not found it for photo time.
All LX or Deore componentry, these were used by a bicycle tour company called Pedaltours, these bikes had been out side for a while before I got them.
They need re cabling new grease and probably bearings, brake pads(##for safety reasons pads should be void of cost as they are safety, item, would hate to have a CVer have an accident because of dried out pads, and penny saving just for a challenge on here?##) etc.
I want to change the BB as the Modus one in there will be destroying the tapers on those Shimano cranks Grrrrrr, I hate it when I see this.
I think I will go with number 4? What do you guys think?

It looks like most people see this as done? I want to build up a bike in this manner and will, only I have other projects that I could spend my time on.
If the late comers are still go and Narhay has redone the time limit to start when you purchase said bike, we should not let this thread die or talk about when to start another.
I am not in it for the competition, just out to get some old bikes riding safely again, see a lot of guys here finding roadside bikes or yard sales etc
Any guys already done that want/can go again?
If I missed the Bus . . . then all good, could someone let me know?
If I go ahead with the challenge it will be with bike number 4, the others are either too nice or need way too much work to come in on budget.
The Reiker is all there, and looking at how the rear derailleur has cleaned up I am pretty confident that it will overall turn out to be quite a nice ride even if it does look like it should smell!!
The Marin rides very nicely indeed, all I have done is check cones, headset, not the bottom bracket though, a bit worried about that I do not know why but I have had more Marin's of this era with stuck BB's than GT, Giant, Trek, Gary Fisher etc? I guess they saved a few penny's by not greasing before installation.

^ I'd say go right ahead and start your project. Some here did begin late. I think the thread was created to help get the folks in the Northern hemisphere to get through our Winter/cold Spring.
Now it's your Winter season, although your weather is likely balmy.
There is also our Before/After thread too that a lot of these projects get posted in.

Got it out of storage today,
As you see it really is a clunker, I like the geometry, I will get it into commuter shape over the coming weeks

I may give this a try with a garage sale find from this morning. A Ross hi-tech mountain bike (not sure of the model) that cost $15. After taking a better look at it tomorrow, I will post a before picture and get working on it.

So do I just post that I am signed up? Found a Schwinn la tour for 15$ or a specialized hard rock for 5$. Are there separate classes for road and mountain?
