Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry, military jargon for the body of accepted policies and procedures designed to keep idiots like me alive. Safety at Sea is heavy on it. There is nothing similar for riding a bike, witness the endless arguments here over “taking the lane” etc.

Speaking of Fat 'Merican, after hitting my weight goal a few weeks back, I've been lax with keeping track of my calories in/out and have stagnated. Now I'm refocusing for a new goal - another 10 lbs (15 lbs stretch). Just tallied up everything that I had on the ride, in addition to my late lunch and early dinner. If I don't eat anything else today, I'm tracking at about a 3k cal deficit. I guess this means I can have that scoop of ice cream.

Oh, an amusing thing from my ride.

During the last half of the ride, I had jumped on a trail - I like to avoid them if I can, but I was a little tired and it was the most direct route home. Anyway, at one point on said trail, I saw a walker ahead of me with a familiar frame/posture/gait. Even though he was facing away from me (going in the same direction), I could tell from 50 yards off that it was one of my good friends... one of my good friends that has never seen me in roadie regalia. So I decided to mess with him. I cruised up next to him, matched his pace, turned and nodded, and just carried on pacing him. For a few seconds he clearly had this "wtf is this guy doing?!" body language going on. When it finally dawned on him, a series of emotions quickly played out on his face and we both laughed our asses off.

I was tired when setting off yesterday. Frankly, I just wanted to roll over and go back to sleep. But it had been a few days, so I went. And was tired the whole time. I got home, had some lunch, took my favorite cold pill, and slept until mid morning today. First day in long memory without coffee. I slept most of the day too. At the moment I feel pretty good until I stand up, and I hope to be up to a real cup of coffee in the morning.
I'm attributing it to the wedding on Saturday, coupled with a weeks's worth of antibiotic leading up to it. It is a rare, rare day when I interact with more than two or three people. Airplanes tend to make me sick too.

This afternoon I helped out some kids that got their basketball jammed between the hoop and the backboard.

Even in cycling cleats, I still have some hops.

It's too cold for ice cream here. So I ate some chocolate instead. M&M hazelnut block. My daily commute is not quite sufficient to offset the amount of chocolate I ate.

At doctors office for my annual physical. Other than some minor/annoying musculoskeletal issues I think I am healthy, although my fasting sugar is a little too sweet. I think the visit should be an easy one for both of us.

Good!

My fasting glucose is always 100 and I have family history, but my Hb a1c is always fine.

Was it Abe Lincoln who said "A doctor who gives himself a physical has a fool for a patient."?
