Why Expensive Commuter bikes?

This post was wildly off topic but I appreciate it. Light bulb moment thinking about my own fit and saddle angle. So thank you, accidentally. Or incidentally. I don’t know. Somebody here must have gone to college and has the right word.

commuting bicycle
I've been wracking my brain trying to think of use cases for expensive commuter bikes ($1000+).
I live in NYC and have Cannondale Quick that I paid $750 for and that was a bit of a stretch for me. But I see these manufacturers selling $1500-$2000 bikes for commuting. To me, an ideal commuter bikes is discrete (drab colors, not flashy, etc.), capable - but without the expense of high-end/name brand components, and most of all - relatively cheap! Because there's a good chance it would get stolen.
Anyone have thoughts? Who's buying these things?

My $1000+ commuter/touring bike (the rear rack alone cost over $200) is still outside where I locked it up, just like it has been every time I have locked it up.

@burnthesheep, I need my saddle pointed up, especially a Brooks saddle, as is the case with many people. I guess my pubic bone is recessed or something. Or maybe I have more weight tolerance there. The pictures that give me pain are the ones with the saddles pointed down. To each his own.

It definitely depends on the quality of level and number of feature.
I've used $3k for fiber+silver black bike. What a fantastic model ever.
