This post was wildly off topic but I appreciate it. Light bulb moment thinking about my own fit and saddle angle. So thank you, accidentally. Or incidentally. I don’t know. Somebody here must have gone to college and has the right word.

I wouldn't have paid $750 for a commuting bike unless I had secure INDOOR parking for it. For commuting, where you lock the bike OUTSIDE, I buy sub-$50 bikes from Craigslist and the like. They all have multiple gears and wider tires (for the lousy roads with potholes and the like), more than enough for commuting. Ebay bikes tend to be more, sometimes a lot more (thousands). I even got one (a sub-$50 bike) for my youngest son, who will be starting college next month. I had to do a little work on it, but not much. I only need get him a decent new lock, which will likely cost more than the bike itself. If it gets stolen, no great loss, I'll get him another!

My $1000+ commuter/touring bike (the rear rack alone cost over $200) is still outside where I locked it up, just like it has been every time I have locked it up.

I have a Cannondale BadBoy with the last of the US made frames that I bought a few years back as a leftover. I paid about $50.00 more than you paid for yours. It's good enough for me. I'm also temped by all the fancy new bikes but what's the point ? There's always gonna be something newer and shinier. I'm gonna slowly upgrade the components on my current frame and be done with it.

Well, it makes a lot more sense than an expensive stay at home bike.

Expensive commuter, I'll take 10

Expensive stay at home bikes I'll take a dozen.

etc.....

@burnthesheep, I need my saddle pointed up, especially a Brooks saddle, as is the case with many people. I guess my pubic bone is recessed or something. Or maybe I have more weight tolerance there. The pictures that give me pain are the ones with the saddles pointed down. To each his own.

expenses

It definitely depends on the quality of level and number of feature.
I've used $3k for fiber+silver black bike. What a fantastic model ever.
I loved it all the time.
