What bike stuff did you already spend on with this year's tax refund
Yup, it's flying out of my pockets like crazy these past few days!
Let's see:
A Genuine Columbus SL frame decal...... To replace the totally obliterated one on my Bottecchia SL.
An NOS, in the box, Selle Italia Turbo SLG (aluminum railed saddle)...... Great deal at 80 some bucks, how can I resist!
And last night, a Cinelli 1R and Giro bar combo with Pinarello pantographing for my Montello.....
(I know, I mentioned recently that my Montello does not need pantographed components, but what could I do?.....It popped up and it was way cheaper than I ever saw for VGC Pinnie pantoed stems!....And it's a 1R to boot!!)
That's it....for now, but who knows what nice C&V stuff will pop up again at eBay tonight??

Refund? Haven't had one of those since I stopped working for Uncle Sam.

Right. We keep our with holdings figured closely enough that we don't get much of anything back, nor do we pay in. I see no reason to float Sam an interest free loan every year.

Exactly this.
Never ceases to amaze me when some people brag about how much they got back, I can't figure out why anyone would let them have it to begin with.

Cloudy with a chance of rain on the vintage parade.
Cool buys and fun stuff. I picked up an 88' Shogun ATB1 from the original owner, 100% down to tires, grips. Moving scratches as he moved a few times and had in storage, but rarely rode. I dub it the Boss bike! Huge 23" fastback frame with that SR MTS-100 stem that stares you down. I only bought because of condition and it compliments my Shogun tourer well. Surely don't need or believe it to be a grail but it was fun as it turned into one of those buys where you get home and go WOW, I have all these parts I didn't even think about! Added black fenders and matching cage and it pops! Black and Red.
I'm very conservative about owing anyone anything. Made a mistake and owed the IRS a couple times so I make sure I don't owe or worry about overpaying some. It's not like it's tens of thousands of dollars being held.

Tax check goes into the family savings, along with my paycheck. My bike money comes from off duty call ins.

I don't even have all my tax docs yet - filing is still a ways off.
But last years refund went in an account to pay my property tax bill that's due each year. (I don't have a monthly escrow)
This year's refund (TBD) will probably be earmarked for the same.
Want to buy some of my excess stuff?

I try to keep a smallish bike fund from selling bikes and components. Its a lesson I learned from Miami Jim several years ago: bikes pay for bikes. So far in 2018, I've spent $700 and sold over $2000. As long as I keep it around 3 to 1, all is good. Only one buy was to keep (84 Trek 770), the rest were to move.
I try to keep tax refunds to a bare minimum. Unfortunately, being retired with an uneven income, sometimes I miss it.

If I am lucky, I will be able to attend Eroica California this year. Often it has just been the wrong weekend near tax time.
Working for this year to be done early. Refund? Never.
It just gets applied to next year's quarterlies.
I am worried about 2018 tax year. I am in a Blue state, if I am lucky with the conferenced bill, my taxes will only go up 20%. As the CPA I use wrote, this law is not good for the repechage household.

out of luck... again
Planned on a new sub-compact crank for the hills around here, but my buddy developed a limp. $380, x-rays, drugs and a couple months to heal up Catfish (my 90 lbs lab/hound). But he's worth it. Guess I'll have to hill train harder.

We usually have to file for an extension—and apply any possible refund to next year’s tax bill.

I live in Sweden now.
I actually get some money back since I buy an expensive transit card every month, and I have a mortgage, albeit at a very low interest rate. The tax rates are high, but the act of filing is simple. If not for my transit cost, I would just send a text message with a code from a document I receive in the mail, and everything would be done. Instead, I spend a couple minutes at the computer. Not much to be done, I guess, because Uncle Sven already has 30% of my coins.
In the USA, I still file taxes because I earn money overseas. I buy the software, I declare my earnings, I deduct them to well below the taxable limit, I file, and I also file the FBAR documents separately since I have overseas holdings.
I have no idea how the changes in the USA will affect me. I'd guess the FBAR requirement will disappear before long. I doubt the entire system will be replaced with a text message any time soon.
On topic: No bike parts, but people here usually use it as a vacation fund, since it normally comes in the summer.

Not really a tax refund expenditure, as i am also in the camp that pays every year - "i owe, I owe, so off to work i go"
But i did "rescue" a teeny tiny 46cm Ironman for 75 bucks -- photos are already in the Ironman thread. Its the one with the 24" front wheel.
I plan to restore it and hopefully make a vertically challenged person very happy

Refund will be minimal if everything goes right...still coasting on Black Friday buys...should be good for the year except maintenance items.
