Admittedly Bizarre Question About Bottle Cage Installation

Since most bottle cages come with adjustment slots, do you install your cages all the way up (closest to top tube/head tube), right in the middle, or all the way down (closest to bottom bracket)?

For example, this is all the way up on my down tube, which is what the bike shop did when I bought my hybrid and had them toss on the cage:

I bought a new cage and just wondering if there's any generally standard positioning.

All the way down. That way it won't try to work its way down, and, of course, lower center of gravity.

Erm...dont think there is a standard.
I guess placing it so gravity doesnt pull the cage down and loose makes sense.

can't say I've thought much of it before as all my cages have 1 circle and 1 oval.

Thanks guys, went ahead and installed the new one all the way down closest to the bottom bracket (and used a little blue loctite) which also gives a tad more room for bottle egress/ingress. Was just wondering if I was missing something since I expected the bike shop to install all the way down originally.

The only reason I’d think one would favor up is to require only a bit less reach of the hand to grab the bottle. But on some small frames, bottles like Camelbak big chill may not fit if the cage isn’t all the way down...

Mine aren't. I suppose the adjustability just depends on the need. If you had a tall water bottle it might need more clearance on the top, and therefore, set it to a lower level.

I have to say, never gave it the slightest thought. I couldn't tell you if they could be moved up/down or whatever. Next you'll be asking about torque values. I guess if you try one position and don't like it (not sure why but OK) you can adjust it later.

All the way down for me. As others have pointed out it is easier to get the bottle in/out with that bit of extra room.

Better cages have only one slotted hole so that they can only be installed one way.

Some cages such as the Arundel Side Loader have two sets of holes. I mount these high when riding without a frame bag so I don't have to reach down as far and low when riding with a frame bag to make extra room for the bag.

Usually just slap it on & tighten down, so probably means most are down, but do recall adjusting to avoid damage to a seat tube decal on one bike. Don

Better cages??? My King cages have two adjustable spotted holes (albeit not huge; but certainly adjustable).
