Spokes, silver or black?

Would I be crazy to build a wheelset with a black hub, black rim, and silver spokes? All my wheels have black spokes, and I'm kind of looking for a change in pace.

It wouldn't be crazy if you had other silver/white accents on the bike that the spokes would compliment; otherwise I'd paint them to match your secondary color. It's tough to say without taking the rest of the color scheme into consideration!

I would say the color scheme is "mish-mash" at best . It's the bike in this image:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BmWjMpxH...onathangennick

I'm changing out the fork, which forces me to change out the wheels.

Shimano hubs. Pacenti rims. I've got silver spokes in the shopping cart, and am planning to alternate green and purple anodized nipples.

Well I dunno if I'd call that full-blown crazy, but you definitely got some outlaw-renegade in you. I mean, seriously, black hubs and rims.....with silver spokes ??? That's really pushing the envelope. I'm betting you're a wild man after a couple tequila shots !

I think it works.

You've got silver crank arms and I think the brand name looks like silver or chrome. So the silver spokes work.

However....the fact that you are asking if it looks okay tells me you don't think it looks good. And your opinion is the only one that matters.

Agreed on that last part. Sometimes it's hard to know what looks good until the parts are all bolted together. Black spokes are the safer choice, that's for sure.

It's a mountain bike- aesthetics are about 11th on a top10 list of importance.
its supposed to be dirty, dinged up, etc.

A lot of quality late 80s and early 90s road bikes had silver spokes and gray hard ano rims. Looked good. Black rims would look good too.

All I can say is that my bike has black hubs & rims with silver spokes, and I wish the spokes were black.

Wow, those colors really pop haha, I'd almost keep the red rims! You've got other matching silver components and the branding looks close enough to silver; I think silver spokes would look good.

Black rim, silver spokes-gets my vote. You have silver on the bike so it will go with it.

I have one bike with black hubs/rims and silver spokes and I really like the look. It gives the bike some pop. All black is yawn. (I have one of those too)

Here's how my bike came from the factory..the silver spoke/black rim combo is not too exciting on it. I really, really like your RED rims with the silver spokes. And AlmostTrick's white bike with black rims and silver spokes looks sharp.

I am going to try and ignore that hideous picture above (you almost do everything right and then decide the non drive side looks better )

I will say that silver spokes look great. I have had similar type wheels and no complaints. On my upcoming mountain bike build I am hoping to do alternating black and silver spokes and nipples because I am going to try to be really loud. That murdered out look is cool but I like a little silver.

Silver it is! (or will be). I want to thank everyone for weighing in and bringing in perspectives I hadn't thought about. (Milton's suggestion of black spokes and silver nipples is interesting!). In the end I guess I just want to see for myself how silver spokes will look, so I'm going to try them. I'll try and remember to circle back once the build is done and post a photo of the outcome.

My immediate gut reaction was “No” to silver. Then I looked at the pic and thought “silver will work on that bike”

I have a wheel 1 black spoke, black hub CD rim,
and 1 Black hub /spoke /rim, Rim Brakes so that's silver..

Black anodized hub has no need for polishing.. like a polished one does ..

Q: How much time do you spend Polishing, and Admiring your bike?

Well, I wouldn't put it that way. It's just a bike, after all. The fun colors do add my enjoyment of it, but I don't worship the thing. It's just a bike.

Wait, where is the "Black spokes are dangerous due to the way they are manufactured" crowd?? Google, or do a search here, and you will find them. The esteemed Wisconsin bike shop Yellow Jersey actually tried to feed me that tripe.

I think maybe it’s just the retrogrouch in me, but black spokes are just wrong.
