Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - Nov 27/28/29/30

Happy American Thanksgiving to the Americans on the forum. Are you celebrating Thanksgiving by cycling? Maybe to burn off the the turkey dinner?

Will you or did you cycle with friends or family? Will you or did you take this weekend as a training weekend? Or maybe a touring weekend?

Tell us about your cycling this weekend ... indoors or out.

Way down south here, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving ... so it's just an ordinary weekend for us. But we've got some cycling plans up our sleeves.

So far ... I've just been walking, but for me, the weekend doesn't begin for a few hours yet.

Our gym opened from 5 am to 1 pm on Thanksgiving so we went in and did 40' on the Stepmill and over an hour in the weight room. We had a great workout, along with a number of other regulars. The consensus was that we could better avoid looking like weirdos who didn't eat like Americans because by working out first, we could give ourselves permission to eat more "normally."

Rowan and I did something like that over Christmas a couple years ago. We were staying with my family for a month ... and eating big family dinners, and going out, and eating delicious baked goods, etc. etc. so we were in danger of putting on a heap of weight. But as soon as we got there, we got a 1-month gym membership at the local recreation centre, and went there for a couple hours just about every day. Plus some cycling outside. I ended up losing about 6 lb and Rowan lost about 10.

Saturday -- 43.34 km on our tandem. This is the first time we have ridden it since about early September 2013, I think. It has been in storage all this time.

We had a beautiful day for it ... high of 25C, light winds, sunshine ...

And then we strolled around town after, and picked up a few things for dinner.

Gf talked me into running a 5k today. Havent ran since july so i was well rested. Got 3rd in my 30-34 agw group with a pretty unimpressive time. Course had a good hill in the middle where i would have liked to have had my bike instead... Up and down

Sun. Might do an easy spin to work the kinks out

82 miles with a friend today. Sunny, with temps between 66-72* Fahrenheit. Had a ham and cheese sandwich at mile 60. Perfect!

Sunday -- we cycled 25.39 km on our tandem through the flatlands of northern Tasmania. Quick ride.

A little bit cloudy and 21C out there.

Sunny today but below freezing, ice patches from recent rains and flooding. Didn't ride, so went hiking with riding buddies for 2.5 hrs in a nearby park. Most trails hard frozen, a few water trickles in warmer microclimates. Beautiful hike.

We spent time with my in-laws in Boca Raton this weekend. I called the local bike club, but was told to come out Saturday, not Thursday. I can understand. Thursday was a C ride, and I've never been on a group ride. Saturday was a multiple level ride, so if I couldn't keep up with the C folks, I could drop back to the D ride. All the rides were 35 miles, so I road by myself.

Thursday, I drove to A1A and cycled north along the Atlantic Ocean for about 8 miles each way, for a total of 16.4 miles. It was chilly for me, at about 58 F. I wore some of my new cold weather gear, and realized I dressed up too much. Live and learn.

Saturday, I cycled from my in-law's home and did a 30 mile circle. This is now the farthest I've ridden so far. Sunday, at the Miami Tour de Cure, I cycled 29.3 miles and yesterday 30.26. I've been increasing distance about 10% every two weeks. Perhaps next time I visit the in-laws I will call the club ride again. I'll feel more comfortable after riding 30+ miles.

Thursday ate turkey and watched football. Friday we continued our tradition of avoiding anything commercial and spent the day at the newest FL state park, Colt Creek. It is a beautiful park with several lakes. We had a picnic and intended to do some walking. However, the recent rains had flooded out the trails. Saturday I spent taking down Thanksgiving decorations and putting up Christmas lights. Sunday I got in 35 miles of bike riding. I felt like I was carrying around a turkey in my stomach. I have to start riding more.

Sunday must have been wet...it poured almost all day at my house...

I got my rides in Thursday/Friday (50 miles total as there were other duties that made any longer ride impossible).

Saturday was raining too. I am not ever going to be one of those that ride in any condition...I did that when I was a kid but now riding is for fun and riding in the cold and the rain ain't fun

however walking the dog in the rain is kind of fun....partly because no one else is out and so I can let the dog off leash without worry that she might get into a fight with another dog...(she's a street dog rescue so has odd behaviour with which dogs she likes and which she does not and it's not predictable so if there are other unknown dogs around she cannot be free ). In the rain and the thunder on Sunday no one else was crazy enough to be out but us so she got to run and sniff everywhere...good times for her

Did a nice 15 mile quick run on the new to me Spec / Tarmac on Friday.

Then on Sunday the roads were wet and it was raining slightly so I pulled out the Hybrid and put on about 10 miles of hard trial / back road dirt riding.
