Weinmann 610 brakes - pads suggestions please?

Hi

My daily bike - a 60s Claude Butler had worn out its brake pads, I had my LBS change them whilst it had a full service last week, I got it back and the braking is pretty slack – on hills it brings me to a gradual slow rather than a sharp stop and it's even worse in the wet - just slowing me down on hills. I took it back and after the mechanic had a good go at adjusting them he conceded the brake blocks they stock were probably the wrong compound for the old steel rims.

The brakes are Weinmann 610 centre pulls - i'm wondering if any kool stops or similar could be fitted to improve the braking?

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Mark

The Kool Stop Salmon are not bad, but the original Matthauser formula is being produced now by Yokozuna for Scott-Matthauser. I just changed a few of my bikes last year and am glad I did. I like the solid feel of the old Matthauser blocks and they work better in the wet.

I have used the Kool Stop Campy pads available from Harris in my original Weinmann holders.
IIRC, I had to pinch them closed just a bit to snug them. (Of course I took care to orient them in the proper direction - the old W. Shoes are open at one end.)

Here you go, Kool stop makes lots of brake pads. They even make inserts for most vintage brake pads holders. I'm liking the HS33 pro.

The HS-33 is for Magura hydraulic rim brakes. The HS-33 pro does look cool, though.

morksmith, Kool-Stop makes pads for Weinmann brakes, the 4 dot, 6 dot, and X models. They slide into the old holders. Use a hammer if needed.

AFAIK, Kool-stop and Yokozuna use the same Matthauser formula.

I use the Cross pads with Weinmanns and they work great. The steel rims put you at a great disadvantage when it comes to stopping in the wet.

Kool Stop makes two different styles of pads (4 dot and 6 dot) that are direct replacements for your Weinmann holders. Available in salmon or black:

Went for Kool Stop Continentals in the end in Salmon - fitted fine and the difference in braking is huge - they are great, went from a real limp slowing down gradually action to being able to skid to a halt instantly...
